Faced with the need for a new mattress I am also considering the alternative of an electric bed. I would welcome comments/advice. In addition it seems there could be a case for VAT relief based on the lifelong requirement to sleep at a raised angle coupled with a need for supporting medication. Your observations will be appreciated.

Definitely no vat to pay, you are eligible for vat relief on anything you need for your health needs. Just say to whoever you buy from and they’ll exempt you.. there’s loads of beds out there, i’m Sure you’ll find one to suit.
I have an electric bed and it is a life saver. One of my lovely daughters got it for me, makes life so much easier.
We have just invested in one, as piles of pillows have been ok for the last 18 months, but Mick often slips in the night and this causes issues for days.
It is well worth the money! We could not get VAT relief as the bed was not classed as a disability bed by the manufacturer, it was simply an adjustable bed. But as £649 for a king it was worth the money, I was we had brought it months ago.
Electric beds are brilliant and at friends I use recliners or sometimes take a gravity chair if staying a while so I can sleep in it occasionally and it takes no room in the car xx
I have one and agree, they are worth every penny.
Highly recommended..it’s been a life saver...5 years post op and no longer need it..I’m not changing it though... no chance...!

One of the best things we bought. Solves the problem of slipping down from pillows......... we also bought a blow up wedge pillow which we put under the mattress when travelling and gives the same relief. We didn’t pay VAT either on the bed, a good saving.
As everyone says, it’s the most comfortable option. I bought mine secondhand but purchased a new mattress. But you wouldn’t get vat relief on the mattress alone. One thing to note is that the length (of a single at least) is 6’6”/190cms. So it’s longer than a standard single. You can get fitted sheets from IKEA who do this ‘continental’ size in their bed range. Harder to find this size in the high street. Foam or foam topped mattresses can get a bit warm too. If you still slide down a bit overnight, use a (high density foam) pillow just below your bottom to help prevent this, but after a while you’ll find that ‘sweet spot’ of an angle that’s upright just enough to prevent reflux, but not so high that you slide down with gravity. I tried various wedge pillows etc for 4 years and finally bought an electric bed, much better for night time reflux and comfier. We have a double which is effectively two separately controlled singles bolted together. VAT relief only on one half, really stumped him when I asked for VAT relief on half of the headboard !
