hi - i am Dianne - had an oesophagectomyin January 2018 - went swimmingly well according to the surgeon - recovery all seemed good apart from what I thought was initial problems with the jejunostomy tube.

From a few days in it leaked and attachment of tube to my side was not perfect or so it seemed - after a week or so there was a problem that needed a procedure to clean some build up of an abscess in that area - it continued to be somewhat of a problem until the tube was removed

Once removed in March the wound healed and all was well until Sept when i noticed some leakage from where the jejunostomy site,

so a few visits to the hospital where various things were done from dressings to the site being drained to an overnight stay, after the abdomen wall was cleaned or whatever - from there the wound from that procedure healed but the jej site still leaks - i am told its a “fistula”

from Sept to now there is no pattern - initially the site purged every few days - then every day for a while - it then purged and healed and looked to be resolving until the pattern repeated 10 days or so later - for the last few weeks its been discharging most days

its perfectly manageable but it would be nice if it decided to heal - that said the alternative is not something i look forward to - i am told that to [hopefully] cure the problem involves another op which involves removing a section of my bowel - but even that might not be 100% successful so i am nervous

the purpose of the above is not to put any off from the whatever op - thats seems to have been successful but to ask if others have had this problem and what did they do - the general advice from the team is let my body sort it out which i fully respect - they have got me this far why should i argue with them but any other views would be welcome

Dianne72,

I have not had this but I presume the Dr’s and nurses see similar all the time but if you are worried then go back and insist they do something, maybe the operation you suggest or if infection could you ave stronger antibiotics. Would changing your diet help?

Maybe ask them what all their alternatives are.

Hope you find answers and get this resolved.
