Hi everyone,

This is my first post in this forum and i'm after some advice regarding diets.

I'm asking on behalf of my fiance who suffers really badly with the symptoms of GERD.

What diet best helps to ease the symptoms?

Thanks in advance

Nikki

You are very welcome here.

It s sensible to stay away from spicy food and anything that causes a reaction. Keep a food diary because that often helps. There are a number of books around, but people are quite often sceptical about them, primarily because the level of alkali and acid in food is relatively small in scale compared with the strong acid that is naturally present in your stomach.

So the priority really is to eat healthily, and concentrate on the underlying causes of the reflux. A doctor will probably prescribe Omeprazole or a similar medication for a couple of months to see whether this resolves the problem. If not, then an endoscopy, a miniature camera put down your throat, would show any obvious signs of something being wrong, for instance a stomach ulcer.

Long term reflux can damage the lining of the oesophagus and lead to Barrett's Oesophagus, a condition that does carry a risk of cancer, but that simply means that one needs to take these things seriously but sensibly, without over-reacting, to try and resolve the underlying problem with your doctor.
