Hi Gail.

I think you have answered your own question. Not overeating would be a good start. Easier said than done I know but it's a good idea to listen to your body. If you don't already try sleeping propped up a little. I also find Gaviscon Advance a great help.

Kind Regards

Steve

Hi Gail,

Have you had an endoscopy? If not, I strongly advise you to speak to your doctor and ask to have one. Best to make sure it's not something more.

Good luck.

My question would be how long you have had this reflux for? It is usually because of the sphincter muscle by your diaphragm not keeping your stomach acid in its right place. This is sometimes because of weight pressing the stomach contents upwards (eg during pregnancy) or a hiatus hernia where part of the stomach protrudes above the diaphragm.

You can do a certain amount by avoiding eating later in the evening, sleeping propped up and avoiding spicy food, cigarettes and alcohol but if you have had this for some years you really need to go to your GP and ask to be checked out for underlying causes.

Gaviscon Advance can indeed be helpful.

It might conceivably be bile reflux which is alkali rather than acid.

If you have had this for years, and used to feel heartburn, but no longer do so, you should ask for an endoscopy (a miniature camera put down your throat) because in the long term the acid can start to change the cells of your oesophagus. This stops you feeling heartburn, but may be because you have developed Barrett's Oesophagus ( a cancer risk). There is more information on actionagainstheartburn.org.uk

Most of the digestive problems can be resolved in a fairly straightforward manner, but it is also important not to be on Omeprazole long term without a proper review and diagnosis through your GP.

Hi could you tell me what heart burn is I have a burning in the back of my throat and I have had it about a month now I also have had 2 attacks when orange stuff came up And sometime I think I have something stuck in my throat

in reply to Gail72

It is a burning sensation / ache in the middle of your chest caused by the effect of stomach reflux on the sensitive cells of the lining of your oesophagus that runs from your diaphragm up to your throat. I think you should ask to see your doctor to get checked out. If the orange stuff was yellow phlegm it might have been the side effects of some form of chest infection but I think you should get checked out.

Hi Gail

Sorry to hear you are suffering! Like some have said , I really would encourage you to have a Gastroscopy or Endoscopy. I couldn't believe that I was starting to have problems in that area the same time as my husband had been diagnosed with OC ! I didn't feel like it was acid reflux but more and more I suffered terrible pains behind my breast bone particularly after I ate and at night....I actually thought I was having a heart attack or just stress due to hubby. Needless to say because of him I thought it sensible and was given a Gastroscopy (small tube goes up nose down back throat/stomach) in a way I was relieved it was something but hadn't expected Barrett's Oesophagus ! couldn't believe we both had trouble in the same area ! 2 tabs a day and so much better .....does mean I will be under surveillance from now on which after my husband Tony , is a blessing ! Ask your GP .....it's worth it ! It was no big deal ....good luck x
