I have been diagnosed with an Hiatus hernia. I have a persistent dry cough. My family and friends keep telling me that it should be investigated as it worries them. My GP is aware but doesn't seem concerned. I don't take any meds for my HH just Gaviscon. This is due to personal choice.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I had the same, it is due to the acid irritating your throat. My family kept nagging me and I even had a chest x-ray. I blame the TV advert about "a persistent cough being a sign of lung cancer" !! I hope you find a treatment that suits you soon. Best wishes.
Is it worse at night? If so, you might try sleeping with the head of the bed raised, or propped up with pillows.
Many people do not have their hiatus hernias fixed, for fairly sensible reasons, but exposure to long term reflux does have a health implication, which your GP would have discussed with you.
Hi my daughter had terrible acid reflux and oesophagitis she was coughing all night and I mean all night she was taking umpteen ppi and antihistamines every night she was on waiting list for op now she is off all medication only one pillow and has been took off waiting list Drs can't believe it, she had endoscopy to make sure what I was giving her wasn't masking the problem it showed know inflammation at all.I've mentioned this a few times on healthunlocked but no one seems to want to get better so this is the last time I'm going To try and help, people should be inundating me asking me what I did to cure yes cure my daughter as acid reflux can lead to serious problems well I've had my bit winge hope you message back thanks Fina's
I would like to know your cure please. Have suffered with reflux & hiatus hernia for about 5 years now. I also have an ulcer in my Osophagus & grade C Osophagitis ,Another endoscopy next week after high dose of PPI's to see if it clears up the inflamation if not they are talking about operation & don't much like the sound of it.
Hi kaz my daughter had almost the same as u she was grade b she also had the hernia, but she didn't have the ulcer.Which could be a problem as my cure goes against what the Dr's say, u have to stop taking ppi and antacids r u will never get better The thing is I don't know how your ulcer will react to the mixture as it is acidic reply back if u want to have a go. Regards Fina's
Hi Fina's I have actually finished the high dose so taking nothing this week before endoscopy to see what happens. Would be interested to hear more of your cure as I dont like taking meds as just covering up the problem. I don't know if it would be a problem with the ulcer but worth looking into.
Hi kaz the reason u have this problem is because the acid in your stomach is not strong enough which means the food you eat doesn't get fully absorbed which allows bacteria to grow that then relaxes the sphincter and you get acid reflux,if acid is Of The right ph the sphincter has to stay closed or it would kill you. What I used to fix the problem is. A, apple cider vinegar with mother raw unfiltered. 1to 2 table spoons. B, Ginger, tumeric and cayanne pepper All 3 together would be tip of tea spoon. C,freshly squeezed lemon and lime and orange mix all together, the amount to take is about a shot glass twice a day before meals you will still get acid reflux at first just suck extra strong mints and if need be the odd antacid This worked for my daughter. you must be careful as u have a ulcer. It's not nice to drink could give you a upset stomach for day r 2 please persissed this will sort it good luck finas
I have heard of this before but not tried. I was however having a glass of warm water with lemon first thing every morning & this did make me feel a little better but maybe it was this that caused the ulcer. I will see what the next endoscopy shows & take it from there. Many thanks for your advice.
Regards Kaz
Hi,
Have same, diagnosed Hiatus Hernia years ago. Prescribed Omeporazole but find one or two Rennes worked faster to stop pain. Now though having bouts of being unable to swallow and wanting to be ill after trying to eat. Saliva starts and food can not stay down. Too long have continued bad habit of eating at night and not taking Omeporazole. So have to accept this as yet another level and my fault. Recommend treating yourself kindly and taking Omeporazole especially after late night meals or spicy or other gastric irritating foods. We move around in the night and stacking pillows, raising the bed does not work but sleeping mostly on the left side does because of the shape of stomach and oesophagus.
After a persistent cough taking over my life, I diagnosed myself from Dr. Robert Bastian (see Youtube). as a sensory neuropathic cough. I now take drugs that work on a neuralgia level, sort of calm down the nerve endings that activate the cough. One drug is amitryptiline (Endep is one generic name) At least this quells the cough after all that time, I was over the moon. What comes first I wonder, as recently specialist found the Hiatal Hernia, causing Gerd, or did the cough (which was violent at times) cause the Hernia? Not sure. Anyway I take a reflux type tablet each day but that didn't help, as ALWAYS have the lump at the back of my throat and feel like it's phlegm as can cough it up. Apparently that's a normal part of the Gerd. I am now making my own KEFIR (look that up) and hoping that helps create all the friendly bacteria to keep from the acidity. Chronic coughs are often a few things combined. BUT HELP IS NEAR with the quelling the nerve endings. Another great side effect of the Endep it helps me sleep as well. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE my cough was TAKING OVER MY LIFE, spasms, couldn't go to movies, couldn't have a conversation it was TERRIBLE.
