Gentle jogging

I saw a programme the other day where a physio said that gentle jogging actually strengthens arthritic joints. I’m a 65 year old avid exerciser and so far have strengthened my muscles which has really improved my knee problems. I’ve downloaded the Couch to 5k app and with the help of a knee support I’m going to give it a try.

Go you, Nannymo30! Contrary to popular belief, recent research suggests that jogging does not increase the risk for arthritis and it doesn't worsen arthritis in joints that are already affected. Why, you ask? There may be some degree of strengthening in terms of strengthening leg muscles and connective tissues that support and stabilize the knee. Running can also have a greater impact on weight management or weight reduction, which in turn reduces joint load (though, diet is still the overwhelming influencer in weight management compared to exercise). The biggest reason may be the one you can't see. Running triggers a physiologic response in your cells that helps to reduce inflammation in the knee joint. Inflammation, of course, is one of the bad guys in arthritis and a good thing to reduce. Nice to have the guidance of the app to help you progress. Start low, go slow, and keep an eye on yourself. We're not going for "no pain, no gain" here. ;-) Keep us posted!
