Hey Guys, I hope you are getting along OK.
This week has been fairly full on! On Thursday, I went to see my Consultant at City Hospital, Birmingham. It is so important to find the right consultant for you. Professor Caroline Gordon has been amazing for me.
When I was first diagnosed with RA at 15 years old I was sent to a hospital in Peterborugh, where I saw a very well respected consultant that basically told me and my mother to give up, have a life of steriods and wheelchairs, just be a vegetable. That is not the best thing to tell already seriously ill ( epilepsy, depression, eating disorder and self harm) teenager. I was supposed to be in a wheelchair by the time I was 20.
My saviour was going to uni in Birmingham and having to change professionals. I landed with Prof Gordon and although she doesn't ride, she has been brilliant. Getting me physio and all kinds of help. Her support, writing letters and getting me the right help from GPs has been so valuable.
After Uni, I went back home and back to Peterborough's consultants. To be told I was 'untreatable' and obstructive to my own treatment'. Prof Gordon agreed to have me back under her wing.
Although it is a long way to go to get treatment, my relationship with Prof Gordon is so important to my health and quality of life that it is most definitely worth it.
Friday was a totally different kettle of fish! The cross discipline Media workshop day for the BEF Excel Talent Programme, of which I am a member. this was a real eyeopener on how to attract support and funding, so here goes- please could everyone do one tiny thing for me? - Please 'like' on FaceBook Bert Sheffield Para Equestrian Rider? If you subscribe to my page you can follow the progress of me and my horses towards the World Equestrian Games and the next Paralympics in Rio.
Thank you so much!!!
