citalopram is an anti depressant.. it is quite a low dose.. it is a ssri anti depressant and this one is not used off licence for pain.. some degree of depression is quite common with RA some times it is transient.. there is no problem/ shame in taking an anti depressant.. at the end of the day if a medicene can help you feel better that is its purpose! the three meds are all ok together

I've been taking Citalopram for 6 months now (previously on Paroxtine) and have found it helps enormously. RA definitely can cause or exacerbate the symptoms of depression - don't worry! I', sure your GP wouldn't haveprescribed the three drugs together if there were a problem, but you can always check up agan with your surgery if you are at all worried.

thank you very much for both of yours advice i am finding things a little hard at the moment . i had back surgery in nov the 2nd one in for years to release nerves that a disc had fell onto consultant says ostoarthritis but now i wonder if ra i was diagnosed with ra in june and it just seems a bit over powering at times but i am sure i will get there

thanks again xx

Hiya,

I was speaking to an oesteopath yesterday, he made me look at anti-depressants in a different more positive way, he said that because we have this inflammation and the body/immune system fights all the harder; thus causing more inflammation, we must do all we can besides taking the dmard's to reduce it ie; anti inflams, diet, steroids ect, .......but he also said that being down, stressed and/or depressed will caused the body to again fight back and add to inflammation and by taking these anti-depressants will also help reduce inflammation allowing the dmard's ect do there job, I'm sorry but I do waffle and am not so good at getting to the point! :) but it made sense to me who has been toying wether or not to take them..

this allows you to put in your medications and it will check for drug interactions for you, very helpful, I check it whenever a new drug is mentioned (along with our Alison aka summer)

Hope this helps!

I would rather not take the antideppresant but i know it helps me to lead a better life and cope with R A.
