Hi all

Looking for advice as any of you suffered from fungal nail I have had problems for the last four years no treatment has help could I ask if anyone as berm prescribed the oral medication when taking Methotrexate?

I was considering requesting the oral medication however I have heard that you cannot take it if you take methotrexate. At my wits end I managed to cure one set of of toe nails but the other set refuses to budge.

I’ve been prescribed fluconazole several times whilst on 25mf MTX, as well as biologics and steroids. Didn’t have any issues. Taking both increases the risk of hepatotxicity- liver issues. So may depend n how your liver function tests are, mine have always been fine

My podiatrist advised Emtrix which did help on my fungal toenails though it took about five months and unless you paint it on persistently for the time it states it has a habit of reappearing.

The only cure is oral Terbinafine but it can increase liver toxicity if taking Methotrexate. It depends what dose you're on and it's worth asking the rheumatology team as they can advise you as to whether you can decrease MTX whilst taking it. Long shot really as there isn’t any other fungal nail preparation sold over the counter that really does the biz. Emtrix did work for me - it’s about £20 from Amazon. Best of luck!

I have this issue two. Twice I've left in bits of nail for testing. They won't give you tablets without a positive test for fungus. First sample was lost and second negative.I've been using curanail daily and I got an electric file to file the nail down. It seems to be working.

Pure tea-tree oil - applied with a dropper so it soaks into the nail bed - worked for me.

Yes, fine to use undiluted on toes. Did you get 100% pure tea tree?

I put a single drop on my toe every day with a dropper so it completely flooded the cuticle around the nail bed. I then let it soak in and dry. It was very successful - you'll see the improvement within a couple of weeks, but be aware you'll have to let the nail grow out before the unsightly bit disappears.

I was chuffed with how it worked. But I was assiduous about doing it every single day - it took about 9 months for the nail to grow out! Well worth it though IMO, effective, cheap and no horrible drugs! Good luck

Hi 231954! I’ve used organic coconut oil mixed into a paste with baking soda. I just mix the two until I see a texture like that of toothpaste. Dab a small amount on, under and around each effected nail, wrap a bandaid around my toes for the night. In the morning remove the bandaids and trim my nails. The fungus will grow back but my doctor told me the antifungals used are too hard on the liver. Organic coconut pig has antifungle properties as I have read. It needs to be organic though. Good luck with this. It works for me every few months.

Forget all the meds. They don't work. Use tea tree oil. Just rub a drop or two on your infected nails . I did it at bedtime because it does smell. Do it every day and it will clear it up. Does take several days but you'll see the difference. I went to Dr's. over a year and this cured it.

I'm having similar issues with fungal nail. I took oral antifungals which helped but didn't cure it. I'm now seeing a foot health practitioner (I'm not sure if this is the same as a chiropodist!) and she's been great. She has thinned the nails down and trimmed away any crumbly nail or nail that's lifted. She also recommends applying tea tree oil every day, on the nail, under the nail and on the skin around the nail. I've been doing this and feel a bit more positive about things. It's too soon to tell if it's working yet, but I'd prefer to use tea tree than take yet more unpalatable medicine, so I'm giving it a go. I'd also heard that coconut oil was antifungal so massage my feet with it every night. I don't know about the antifungal properties but a daily massage is lovely and my feet have never been so soft!

Hi … just to add my experience of ‘fungal nails’ .

I too thought that was what I had .

Every nail on my feet has been affected and my nails just crumble away on a daily basis - not a pretty sight so open toe shoes and sandals are a no no

Turns out that it’s most likely that I have psoriasis of my toenails - so that’s why no creams or medications will get rid of it for me
