Hi everyone. I'm new here and had Ra for twenty years. My consultant has suggested I have silastic joint replacement on both my hands as they are so damaged. Has anyone else had this surgery? I'm just a bit worried as am a typist and wondering about my work. Thank you

Joint replacement surgery on hands
Silastic - that's a new word for me.
"Silastic (a portmanteau of 'silicone' and 'plastic') is a trademark registered in 1948 by Dow Corning Corporation for flexible, inert silicone elastomer."
I’ve had this done on my rt hand, 3 knuckles replaced and tendon realigned. It was a success and can now do most things but careful of lifting anything heavy. Important thing to do is wear the finger splints as instructed and for the length of time advised and most Importantly do the exercises religiously. I had a very good hand physio the hospital. Good luck with your surgery x
So glad I’ve put at ease . I had mine done with an arm block which isn’t as scary as it sounds so as not to have a general anaesthetic and come home same day feeling ok. Physio was 6 wks but had to do exercises for longer. X
I hand this done a few years back now. It has almost kept my hand in a good shape and allows normal use. I should have gone back to get the other one done but being off sick from work wasn't an option back then. You will be fine and won't know yourself afterwards. I agree with Pulfs that exercise is so important to benefit the use later down the line and maintain shape. I wish you well. Take care xxxx
