American accapella group Pentatonix have done a few Christmas songs and I’m thinking of one called .. You’re a mean one Mr Grinch!

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch

You really are a heel

You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch

You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel!…

Wasn't there a radio programme called Children's Favourites 😟

sunnyweek profile image
sunnyweek in reply toMadBunny

Yes, Uncle Mac, loved it, he always ended with Goodbye Children Everywhere.I remember Black hills of Dakota, runaway train, I know an old lady who swallowed a fly, laughing policeman, etc. Later taken over by Ed Steward (Stewpot) about 1968 and became known as Junior Choice. I think Leslie Crowther did it for a short while before Ed.

Loved to sing along to Junior Choice’s Morningtown Ride by the Seekers .. Rocking Rolling Riding. My Mum taught me .. I know an old lady who swallowed a fly when I was 3. I was horrified but laughed at it a lot. She taught me Burlington Bertie and A couple of Swells too which I loved to hear, when I was 4 and I can remember all the words to this day. We were always listening to music and singing along.

What happy memories you have. I remember all those too. I managed to persuade my father to write to children's favourites to play Take me back to the black hills from calamity jane, I loved Doris Day's voice, it didn't get read out though, but was often played. I well remember Burlington Bertie and A couple of swells, so lovely that you sang together.

I’d love to get the DVD of Julie Andrews singing her version of BB in the film Star, wasn’t it? It’s much older than that though as we sang it in 1963 and Star wasn’t until around 1968 I think. I think it’s an old Victorian music hall song from a male impersonator called Vesta something. Rings a bell. I’ve got no end of DD DVD’s too! She was one of my heroines. Gorgeous to look at, so funny and a great singer actress and dancer. Calam was brilliant. I must get that out to watch over Christmas. I imagine thousands of children’s parents wrote in to Stewpot. The nice gesture was that your Dad wrote to him. 💗

sunnyweek profile image
sunnyweek in reply toNeonkittie17

Yes it was Vesta Tilley. I can remember B Bertie being sung on The Good Old Days tv programme when young. I must checkout Julie Andrews singing it. I agree about Doris Day, and it is always a joy to watch Calamity. I may look it up over Christmas, I'll be in mostly, due to retux this week, and am flaring so I need it. Have a lovely day x

Good old days was filmed in my home town of Leeds at the City Varieties theatre. Lovely old place and was refurbed beautifully a few years back I’ve been hundreds of times to that theatre to see shows but never the GOD itself! My Late dad’s colleague (They were manufacturing chemists, not theatre directors/producers!) was the brother of Barney Colehan who produced and directed the show for over 30 years. Hope your Rtx goes well. Have a good day. Mine has been a very difficult start with a phone call from the immunologist. 🤨 Hope you get to watch CJ over Christmas! x

sunnyweek profile image
sunnyweek in reply toNeonkittie17

That's so interesting about the theatre and your late dad's colleague's brother producing the show, fascinating, I love old theatres and how lovely to know somebody connected to them. That was a good show to be watched with the family and because it was musical a joy to watch, as well as listening to Leonard Sachs and his fabulous words!Sorry you've had a difficult morning due to the phone call, I know you are waiting for your immunoglobulins to increase so you can start a new biologic. I'm wishing you well as always xxx

Many years ago , when we lived in Grays Essex the townsfolk were asked to go to the theatre to fill it up. It had an old organ that came up from the stage! We all sat for two hours listening to music. Months later we found out that we were the audience for Roger Rabbit with Bob Hoskins.

sunnyweek profile image
sunnyweek in reply toGreen230461

I bet that was enjoyable then finding out why, plus seeing an organ appear up from below the stage; that reminds me of Blackpool tower ballroom.
