Ear Piercing

Hi Everyone!

I am after some advice. After many years of not wearing earrings one ear lobe has closed up and I am wanting to have it re-opened as my daughter has bought me a lovely pair of earrings. At the moment I am just on MTX, with the possibility of starting a biologic within the next two weeks. I keep forgetting to put the question to my Rheumy nurse, but does anyone know if it is safe to have your ears pierced when on the RA drugs? Has anyone had the procedure done whilst either on DMARD or Biologic? Thank you!

Hi, I'm on 25mg Methotrexate injection and have had 3 extra ear piercings over the last couple of years (in between lockdowns!!). I didn't even think to check with Rheumatology but I think you are right to do so and even more so given you are about to start biologics. Good luck!

No I haven’t but I’d ask the rheumy nurse. It is making a slight puncture. Hope you can have it and wear your lovely earrings! 💗

As long as you go to a proper piercer who follows all the correct hygiene protocols and you do the appropriate aftercare, there should be no problem with getting your ears pierced. Always good to check with your nurse if you have concerns, but I'm sure its absolutely fine. Enjoy wearing your beautiful new earrings! :)

I had my ears pierced. I found they took weeks and weeks to heal. About 2 months I think. I had them done in a proper piercing studio with titanium rings. I'm sure it took so long coz of RD. I didn't get an infection though. I used a spray called Easy Piercing which you can find online to keep them clean and disinfected.

Thank you Angjoplin - I was wondering if the piercing would take longer to heal.

I’ve had many of my piercings done whilst on RA drugs ( never crossed my mind to ask rheumy about it) and had no problems at all. Just make sure you keep it clean and don’t keep touching it 😊

If you have previously had your ears pierced…it’s worth trying to insert an earring …one with a straight post….from the back of your ear..I know that sounds odd …but it often does the trick & opens up the old piercing l

Hi, funnily enough I am considering exactly the same thing! About 2 years ago, I had a bad ear infection, followed by a minor op to remove a lump and the insertion of a gromit. My right ear discharged constantly for several weeks and consequently caused a chronic infection in the piercing in that ear. It wouldn't heal and eventually I gave up and let it close up. However, I really miss wearing earrings and wearing just one looks odd, even though I know many men only have one piercing! I have been thinking about getting another piercing, but not in exactly the same spot, in the hope that it will heal ok, but like you wondered about the effects of methotrexate and Imraldi, given that I have often experienced infections in the past after any type of surgery/procedure. If you do contact your Rheumatology dept, I would be very interested to hear what they think. Many thanks and good luck!😊
