Have just had rheumatology appointment i Have been put on prednisolone for 4 weeks 15mg to help manage a flare and while medication is adjusted
How likely will this cause weight gain?. I asked and was told it may do ? I Have a history with eating disorders and am currently overweight i don't want to be in pain however the thought of gaining more weight is terrifying to me is there any way weight gain can be avoided x ?

Hi cpr02 I am on my 3rd week on prednisolone 2weeks at 15 mg 2weeks at10mg and 2weeks at 5mg like you I was a bit concerned about gaining weight but haven't so far hope this helps
Hello cpr02, I am on 3rd week of Pred as well, Started with 10 mg now down to 5 mg, going to try 2.5 starting this week. I never experienced weight gain on Pred. I took it for almost 3 months when I was first diagnosed 2 yrs back and was waiting for Mtx to kick in.
I actually lost some weight while on pred as inflammation in body went down (my guess) but then I got it all back eventually
Good luck with adjusting the medication and with your flare too, hope it all gets sorted out soon! Take care!
It is possible but with a short course you may be ok. So it would be a good idea to make some tweaks to your eating over that period to compensate. Try increasing your fruit and veg intake and switch to whole grains like brown bread, brown pasta etc. If you can drink more water too, especially before each meal that should help also. Good luck.
Hi thanks from my research 20mg is the dose where increased hunger / weight gain happens however maybe I'm assuming the worst I also don't like the sound of a fat(er) face
I already have been eating more healthy as am trying to lose weight my concern is knowing I may put on weight more easily will lead to a more restricted diet x
Hi, I have been on two doses of Pred over the last 15 months. The last lot for 11 months and I can't say I have put on any weight that I can' t contribute to doing slightly less exercise. I think the key is just not to let any experienced 'munchies' win. I kept my diet exactly the same and if I felt I was putting on then I readjusted for a few days. Try not to worry but just be a little observant of what and how much you are eating. Hope this helps and reassures you. x
When I’ve had prednisolone in the past, I did feel like I had a bit of a moon face. But I’m very sensitive to these things - also due to history of an eating disorder.
It seemed to be worst the first 2 weeks and then subside. I did get a few spots as well, which I could have done without!
I do put weight on when the steroid dose is high. Part of that is the problem with not having any sensation of having had enough food! I've found that keeping to a strict routine helps to moderate my intake. And I have been able to lose the weight afterwards.
