Hi, and welcome. I’ve been taking 15mg of methotrexate for the last 9 months. I’ve actually lost 10lbs (most likely as I’ve felt better, and been more active). Good luck with everything, hope it works well for you too.
Thanks for reply fingers crossed medication works I’ve put on 2 stone don’t really want to be putting on any more 🤦♀️
Hi. I am super super prone to weight gain and especially with meds that help it along it’s way as they say. Been on MXT since .... 🤔 May? 20. No weight gain or food cravings on that ... steroids is my culprit 🙄
Hi, I've been taking 15mg for almost a year. I've just checked and can tell you that today, I'm exactly 2.4 lbs heavier than this date in 2020. This is due to lockdown and not methotrexate. My challenge is to keep exercising in these cold, dark days and get the benefit from the MTX treatment. I hope it works for you also.
Hi and welcome. I've been on Mtx for nearly a year now and although I did gain a little bit of weight, I think that was mainly due to the fact that my weight had dropped so much prior to diagnosis and I still haven't regained all of what I lost.
As far as I am aware, Mtx isn't commonly associated with weight gain, although unfortunately steroids most definitely are...
No, not after 40 plus years of taking MTX, I haven't put on weight.
I haven’t put weight on in 20+ years on it either.
Yep .. First year put on a stone even though I ate well and did slot of exercise. 12 months after starting mtx RA spiralled out of control various drugs and my first Biologic I gained another 2 stone. Nurse confirmed it was the medication. On Baricitinib now for 66 days and lost 4Lb long may it continue.
Been on MX for 10 years - not had problems with weight gain
I take 15mg of Methotrexate too, been on it over 10 years without weight gain. My only weight gain was in lockdown one due to stuffing my face.
Thanks everyone for you replies
Hello Charlie, welcome to this wonderful forum. You'll feel at home here straight away with lots of good people sharing their experiences and feelings. Almost all of us find the first months after diagnosis a real shock and there is so much to learn. Cope with all the ups and downs , fatigue, pain etc. After that, life with RA can be rich and active. It makes many stronger and more positive than they were before. I certainly have come out at the other end stronger, more positive, kinder and more compassionate. I would also advise you to click on the NRAS (National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society) website and make use of their extensive base of information on all aspects of living with RA. You'll find many answers there. I send you a blanket of hugs to use in bad moments and wish you well. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon again,
Thanks for your support everyone was really upset when found out I had rheumatoid arthritis just been comfirmed 4 weeks ago😢had 2 hip replacement just over two years ago so though I would be getting my life on track after having them done but no more to deal with I’m only 49 so feeing a bit low at the minute never mind just got to get on with it 😍
Snap at being 49 and thinking I was getting my life back on track ... then wham there you go ... we will get there. I am a year down the line from diagnosis. Big hugs to you 🥰
You’ve been through such a lot, naturally you’re going to be feeling upset.
I think we go through a range of emotions after diagnosis. For me it was depression, disbelief, anger, and finally acceptance. With acceptance came determination - I can’t change this, but I won’t let it beat me. I will take on all the advice/medication, and make it the best it can be.
Believe that you can and will feel better than you do now. For some that takes a little time, but you will get there.
Your life is still going to get back on track - it’s beginning right now with diagnosis, and medication.
All the very best to you, remember to be very kind to yourself, xxx
Hi Charlie,
I take 15 mg of MXT and I didn't get any weight gain. I've put on weight in the past year but that's due to working from home, more sedentary and unable to do any exercise a lot of the time due to flare ups.
Hi Charlie, I've only been taking MTX for 10 weeks, 11 tonight, the first 8 weeks @ 15mg now on 20mg, I found I was actually losing weight which was wonderful, however I've been on gabapentin since Christmas and even if I don't eat hardly anything I gained nearly a stone, I've managed to lose around 5 pounds but finding it difficult to maintain so feel your pain, roll on warmer sunnier weather when we can all get out more. I was going to ask the group if anyone else has experienced weight gain from taking gabapentin. x
Not in my experience, though I admit, I was worried beforehand. Reading up in this lovely forum allayed my fears and, since starting MTX a 16 months ago, my weight hasn't changed.
I lost a stone within the first month 😊
I have 20mg methotrexate and started to lose weight then I had to have Prednisolone again and that definitely made me gain weight and I have just started to lose that steroid weight again xx basically I don’t think methotrexate does cause any weight gain x
