When I was first diagnosed 15yrs ago I was prescribed Sulfasalazine and a strong Ante inflammatory which worked until last May. I started experiencing more and more pain in my hand and shoulders and was almost sure the Sulfasalazine had stopped working. After struggling to get an appointment I was given Prednisone for 10days which worked a treat. The depo one I had a few months later didn’t. I saw my consultant last November and managed to get her to arrange ultrasound on my hands and X-rays on hands and shoulder which came back as showing Osteoporosis and Ostearthritis. She also took me off Sulfasalazine and prescribed Methotrexate at a starting dose. When the follow up letter arrived she had written that the Methotrexate was only temporary as she believed my pain was due to my Fibromyalgia which I’ve had for 30yrs. She said if the ultrasound didn’t show any synovitis she would stop the Methotrexate. I took the decision to stop the ante inflammatory over the weekend as I’m sure that’s been working more than my medication this past year, and sure enough I’ve been in absolute agony all weekend. My hands are swollen so at least I’m hoping the inflammation will show in the ultrasound this morning. Have I done the right thing? I’m so desperate to get my life back.

Late to this so you've probably had the ultrasound by now Barb but I hope it lit up like a beacon. It's an awful position to be in but I'd probably have done the same to be sure of your Rheumy's considered opinion.
