Hi everyone, just prescribed sulfadiazine alongside methotrexate injections as the MTX doesn't seem to be helping. Anyone have any experiences taking these 2 meds together, bit apprehensive about starting the sulfadiazine after reading side effects.....although to be fair all side effects rubbish .. Thanks for any replies Dawn
Methotrexate and sulfadiazine: Hi everyone, just... - NRAS
Methotrexate and sulfadiazine
I take both, and hydroxychloroquine as well. All fine, and few/no side effects now (apart from the bright orange wee). Sulpha was horrible to start with, as it gave me an extremely excitable digestive system. To the extent that I couldn't eat or drink anything outside the house for fear of the results, very embarrassing. However it only lasted a couple of months and then calmed down and has been fine since.
I started sulphazalazine with methotrexate orally as part of the COBRA regime some 4 months ago.(though about to change to MXT by injection.)
Yes it did cause some bowel disturbance at first but this settled. It does take time to kick in and I am now on 1.5 mg twice daily
My pain, stiffness and swelling are now so much more under control-in fact I spoke to my nurse yesterday regarding reducing the doses-a bit to soon as yet!!
I hope it works as well for you-good luck-I also worried about the side effects of all the medication I take-but so far-bloods all fine!
I must say though-that through the dark days and fog of this crazy disease I couldn't have got to where I am now without the support of the AMAZING Bristol multidisciplinary team-I hope that you have similar support🌻
I have been on Sulfasalazine (3 grams a day, now gradually reducing) and MTX for six years and on CIMZIA for the last four years. I have never paid any attention to side effects as long as they no worse than the pain they relieved me off. I am lucky to have these wonderful drugs. I hope they work for you as well as they did for me. All the very best.
