Tablets are cheaper and therefore they are prescribed initially. Can cause nausea and it is for this reason that many people change to injection form as the side effect is less marked. Also think it is absorbed more readily. Have taken the drug for 30 years plus. Hope it is as effective for you.
Best wishes Pam
I was taking 20mg of Mtx by tablet and luckily did not have the nausea but suffered terrible bloating for 2 days afterwards. They have put me on injections which I must say are pretty painless but it seems to have worked and the "fog" is better also.
By injection the whole of the dose is absorbed, by mouth some is absorbed, goes through the liver, back into the gut and may be absorbed again. So you need more of the drug if you take the tablets for the same effect. So you can have a lower dose by injection but the same effect.
But I didn't find that the injection had much less in the way of side-effects for me as I think they were due the methotrexate itself, not to the chemicals that it was broken down into. But some people do find that that they have fewer side effects, so it's worth a try.
When you take injection you know you are getting the dose, sometimes the stomic and other organs rob some of the medicine when digested in pill form, therefore when taken by injection you know your getting the dose. That happened to me, at one time the medicine I thought stopped working, so the doctor recommended injection and we had success. I think injection if safer too, but not positive on that, check it out with your doctor to see what's right for your condition. Blessings.
Taking mtx by injection can be kinder to your stomach less nausea etc, and apparently less stress on your liver. I swapped when i got to 17.5 mg now i inject 20 with no probs good luck
Thanks everyone
