Hi--- has anyone had to stop taking hydroxychloquin due to persistent nausea and stomach problems?:I have been advised by my gp to stop it and he has given me 40mg twice a day of omeprazol to try and settle me. Am worried that by stopping it my joints will suffer. Thanks.

Hi jacki how long have you been on the medication? When I first started taking it a year ago I used to feel just the same, after a few months told my rheumy about it, they said try taking it with milk, it helped me, I used to take mine with water and used to upset my stomach. Hope this helps and you feel better soon, maybe you could ask your rheumy, what they could suggest for you. 😊x

Thanks-- I take it mid meal with half a pint of milk. I've tried everything -- I thought it was the mthx but I was changed to injections 3 months ago and my gastric symptoms haven't improved at all.

Sorry to here that Jackie, i hope you get things sorted out for yourself. Maybe it's the med's you might not be able to tolerate. Some people need to try different ones, till you find one that suits you. Have a word with your rheumatologist nurse next time, they may be able to change it for you. Till you find the right one for you. Hope things get better for you soon, lady B x

Jacki, I may have said before so apols for repeating myself if I am but I started on HCQ & after a year MTX was added. The HCQ was withdrawn because the two weren't working for me but for some reason the MTX on it's own did. Now obviously it wasn't withdrawn for the same reason as you but as your Rheumy has suggested stopping it I hope MTX alone does it for you as well. You know as I do, we all react differently to meds so really all I can say is try I suppose & hopefully your gastro problems will ease & eventually go as the HCQ gets out of your system & as the increase in omeprazole works, I hope so anyway! There is room for another increase in your MTX if your joints miss the HCQ or even trying another DMARD I would think if your Rheumy considers it necessary.

I really hope it's the HCQ & not the MTX causing your problems, you know how well I've done on it & I always wish the same for others. P x

Thanks P--- I went without hydrox last week when my stomach was misbehaving and when it seemed to clear up I took it again last night. Have felt dreadful today- really sickly and full of indigestion. I thought that hydroxy was usually easily tolerated. Gp has given me a months prescription of increased dose and if not settled by then will send me for an endoscope. How's things with you? X☺

I'll pm you a little later Jacki if you don't mind. Been out with friends & feeling a bit iffy so just off for a lie down. x
