Hello all again!

Do any of you use crutches to help with walking? My hip/leg keeps giving way and very painful. Dr just said to speak to rheumatologist but not there for a few weeks yet. Can't get about alone as frightened of falling. Thanks X

I use a single stick with a special support grip, my physiotherapist gave it to me but you can buy them on ebay if you are desperate.. xx

Thank you I will have a look I have splints on both hands so not sure how it's going to work either way x

Its always best to get advice on mobility aids from a physiotherapist. They can show you what they think will best help you, as well as making sure you use it the right way. Far too many people use sticks and crutches completely wrong, and it just puts more stress on their bodies. See if you can self refer to a physio. A lot of places will let you do that now without a doctor referral. Make sure when you phone up you tell them its about mobility aids.

Yes splints on wrists feet and crutches. I got a great lot of help ftom my OT and Physio. I think my Rheumy referred me initially but now I just call them if I need help x

i would definitely fall if I used crutches I am so unco. I use a walking stick but it can be hard ion my hands/shoulders if I have to walk too far but better than falling and breaking something

I joined a Nordic Walking group... the section for the elderly or those with some disability [it is prescribed by GPs in my area of Wales]. I use two light poles and walk everywhere with them. They not only aid walking but also exercise the upper body. It is important to go to a class to be taught the technique properly. I was told years ago by a leader of walks, that it is important always to use two poles as using one puts the spine out twisting it in one direction only.

I have been using crutches for 5 years now and cant walk without them. I got them from the physio department of the hospital when my knees got worse with osteoarthritis. I was given walking sticks at first but kept losing grip with them and dropping them. You have to be shown how to use them properly or they can cause other problems such as hip and arm pain. Can you self refer to physio? Gentle hugs Joolz.x
