Hydroxychloroquine and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

I notice in the leaflet for hydroxychloroquine that a rare side effect is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I already have this and wondered if anyone else has any experience of HCQ being given with this condition. I wonder if it exacerbates it and have asked my pharmacist but she didn't know. I'm a bit worried about taking it. Jane

I don't know anything about this condition but if in doubt you should always ask your Rheumy or GP & it does sound like it needs checking into before taking them.

Hiya Jane. I don't blame you being concerned. Your Rheumy should really have considered whether HCQ was suitable for you before he prescribed it, he's the one who knows your medical history. I would contact your Rheumy nurse asap (it will probably be tomorrow now) & tell her what you've told us & see what she says. x

I agree with Nomoreheels. Hopefully they took this into account when they prescribed, but good to double-check in case this information was missed. Also worth asking whether this will mean that you need closer monitoring while on the drug. Hopefully they will just be able to reassure you that it is okay to take and that they took this into account.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Victoria, your suggestion of discussing closer monitoring is really helpful - i will discuss it with my consultant when i see her in a couple of weeks. Jane
