When can I have another steroid injection?

Recently had my meds changed. Was on 20mg lefluomide and 300mg hydroxy, which was not very effective....had to have a steroid injection 6 weeks ago to calm things down. Now on 10mg mtx, 10mg Lefluomide and 300mg hydroxy. As my lefluomide has been decreased and mtx can take many weeks to click in, I'm concerned that my RA could flare up again so am wondering what is the minimum length of time between injections? Fingers crossed I won't need one, but my joints are playing up more than usual this morning.

Hi Wishbone. In the early days of my RA last year I was given injections monthly of 100mgs Depo Medrol until the MTX kicked in. I think I had 4 of these and they helped a lot. Mine wore off after 3 or 4 weeks so I can understand how you are feeling. I'm on 15mgs MTX and it took almost 3 months to take full effect. It could be you need another injection to help you through this time. Hope you get sorted out and the new combination works well for you soon. Angela x

I think that that is a question that only your rheumatology team can answer. You will have to ask them when it will be OK to have another steroid injection. Everyone is different and so what would be OK for one person may not be applicable to another and it also depends on what type of steroid injection you had. Short acting soluble steroids can give relief within hours and may last for a week. The longer acting, less soluble steroids may take around a week to become effective but can ease the symptoms for longer.You can also ask about pain control while you are waiting for your MTX to take effect. Your GP can also help with this. Hope you get sorted soon.
