20 years a smoker - day 5 of being clean....

OK, well I actually stopped 14 days ago but like an idiot I cheated and had a couple at the pub last thursday night so I restarted on friday morning and here I am. I have stopped successfully before using patches but never lasted longer than 12 months (and that was years ago). Due to not getting any younger amongst other big concerns I really desperately wanted to quit so I have done for good I hope! I have tried every method, ecigarette, patches, lozenges, spray etc and I still think no NRT is easier for me.

It is hard though doing cold turkey.... some days have been real low points.

I am glad I found this forum, it may just help me make the distance!!! It is getting a bit easier but I still have dark moments and stupid thoughts about 'just buying a pack and having one' before I get a grip of myself.

Aaaghh the nights seem longer and lonelier than before!! must stay focused must stay focused...!!!

Congratulations on quitting, and make this your last quit. Day 5 is great news, and yes it does get easier :) try some early nights if you can, it may help. A bag of fruit, sweets or whatever your poison and drink plenty of water. My thoughts are, the first few weeks be easy on yourself, it really doesn't matter how you get there, just don't smoke :) x

I like your thought process!! Going to eat loads of nice stuff then!!

As an aside, I have got the appetite of 1000 horses at the moment too.... or it seems like it!

Hello Darkhorse

Welcome to the forum. Doing well so far. I have use CT myself and found it easier week after week with first two being the worst. Stay close to the forum for support and if not done already read as many old posts as possible. It helped me move past the urge to have the odd puff as I learned to accept smoking is not pleasurable and that I am not giving anything up only gaining loads of good stuff. Take one day- hour at a time and you'll get there. Those in the penthouse are proof it can be done and for me most importantly that life can be enjoyed without smoking x

Thanks guys and girls! The support on here is already making a big difference for me. Thanks so much for the encouragement. It seems you are very alone when quitting!! It is indeed a very personal battle. But speaking to others in the same boat makes a massive difference!! Headed in to day six soon :) Will keep posting . thanks Andrew

Congratulations on your days so far and on posting on here. Commit to this for the forthcoming months; it really does help. And, beyond these early days, you have some experience of quitting. I would really like you to be one of those reaching the penthouse and then telling us about it, finding out what your weak point is/are and overriding it/them. But for now, here's to reaching Day 5. Good decision
