Hiya Kim, was wondering how you were getting on :)

Sorry you're having a c*ap time - know those moods only too well (was like it last Tuesday :/) BUT smoking won't help!!

If you had a fag, you'd still hate your job, people would still be too b.loody precious and take offence where they shouldn't *but* you'd feel rubbish for losing your quit.

((hug))

Can you treat yourself to something nice later? Just to give yourself something to look forward to? :)

Thanks guys, got a bit teary reading your replies because they were really helpful. I'm off the rails today!

Deep down i know smoking won't change a thing, i just dont know what else i can turn to when i feel like this becasue my mind is building up barriers to stop me doing positive stuff if that makes sense? I keep imaging going for a fag break, standing in the sun, deeply inhaling and feeling that rush as i get a hit of nicotine... raaaaa

I'm going to the gym later Gemma so maybe that will improve my mood. I've also been annoyed that ive put on weight and all my clothes are starting not to fit :(

Aww, I know what you mean hun - the tearyness really got to me as well, probably around the same time as you are now? Not sure but I moaned loads about it on here!!

It's normal, it's horrible but it really really doesn't last long!!

That's normal too, and again it goes.

Was in a bit of a state as well early on - how will I cope, what will I do etc *but* smoking doesn't add anything positive to your life - really it doesn't.

What you're doing by smoking is filling a need created by the last ciggie you smoked, which will reappear to be filled by the next, and the next.

Don't think I can be the only smoker who ended up smoking more to try to get the same feeling, the longer I smoked for?

Soon your brain will catch on to the fact you won't smoke again, it will adapt and you'll do just fine :)

Which would be absolutely fab if we weren't all addicts and had to go out in the rain, smoke as fast as possible to not get soaked and frozen *and* if most fags were so bland you hardly noticed you were smoking them!!

Part of me still wishes I was able to be a social smoker for that reason but know those days are long gone.

I'm going to the gym later Gemma so maybe that will improve my mood. I've also been annoyed that ive put on weight and all my clothes are starting not to fit :(

Ooh good luck!!

Bet you notice a difference in your breathing :)

Really should do something too 'cos I've gone up a size :/

Becasue i havent had one for a couple of weeks i forgot that it's an ongoing thing, i've been feeling fine for the last week and then bam i get like this.

It makes me feel more normal that you got teary too, its just not nice when it happens at work is it.

I just like things to happen instantly, im not very patient! But i know im in it for the long haul, it just helps to say the things that i'm thinking regardless of how negative they are.

Yeah part of me still wishes i could go out for a drink and smoke a couple and leave it at that but im an addict and ive tried and failed that too many times. I do know that i can never have one again for the rest of my life...

Ooh good luck!!

The weight gain is annoying me. I have been recording everything i eat so i can cut calories. I guess because its a stimulant we would have burned extra calories and substituted food for fags :\

Anyway how are you getting on hun? x

Don't think you are alone feeling like this..

All of us enjoyed smoking and have a vision tucked away of the fabled enjoyable fag.:rolleyes:Truth is,that fag is a myth.It doesn't and never did exist, that glorious guilt free inhale in the sun.The reality was the stink of fags, the sore throat, the guilt and the cost.I swear,I thought I was just unlucky 'cos I was one of those people who were cursed to smoke forever-other people could quit but I would always be there, last man standing.I was often the last one to stop, the last one to be out on the corner alone, puffing away-I thought it was my fate. I thought I would smoke until I dropped dead.

Not at all-the addiction of smoking, the Con of smoking, the evil of Nicdemon, blind us.Tackle it head on,force yourself to get a quit of one month under your belt by ANY means, then see how you feel. One month sacrificing ciggies,to see whether you can do it for the rest of your life-is that fair? Try that,I dare you.

Hi Max,

I just need to remember that the image i have built up of smoking is a myth, i just get lost in it sometimes and need a kick to change my thinking! I think i had forgotten the feeling of guilt i had everytime i smoked (short memory) and just need to hold onto that feeling...

One month seems like a long way away at the moment but i'm not one to step away from a dare :)

Oh it hits you all the harder then doesn't it?

Those bad days are going to get a lot less though - the longer you get from your last smoke the weaker the nicotine demon gets!!

Oh and flipping heck, it's awful at work!! Went out to my car for a cry a few times and that's definitely not me. PS, waterproof mascara *isn't*

I just like things to happen instantly, im not very patient! But i know im in it for the long haul, it just helps to say the things that i'm thinking regardless of how negative they are.

Know what you mean, I'm the least patient girl in the world but sometimes you've just got to get it done. :)

Yeah part of me still wishes i could go out for a drink and smoke a couple and leave it at that but im an addict and ive tried and failed that too many times. I do know that i can never have one again for the rest of my life...

It's odd isn't it? Do think your mind romanticises cigarettes though - have had lots and lots of sunny days where I probably turned my lungs black in the space of an afternoon but the fags didn't really add anything.

It's more the act of smoking than the nicotine I still miss a bit if that makes sense?

Anyway don't stress about the rest of your life just yet (by the way, mine's going to b about 2 weeks longer *already* by not smoking, and as we're about the same age you should benefit loads too :) ) just don't smoke today!! Tomorrow can worry about itself.

The weight gain is annoying me. I have been recording everything i eat so i can cut calories. I guess because its a stimulant we would have burned extra calories and substituted food for fags :\

I've just started dieting - was binging on cheese on toast, bacon and all kinds of lovely but very unhealthy stuff but am on salads and sensible stuff for now.

Think we all used to smoke a meal at some point or another - I used to have tea and fags for breakfast a fair bit and i know that on days when I smoked heavier (and those days were increasing :/) I really couldn't face food!!

Anyway how are you getting on hun? x

I'm doing pretty well hun, thanks for asking!!

Am not really craving any more - just get the fancy for a fag sometimes, and it's odd but when I'm around smokers it reminds me why I don't smoke any more :p

The idea of a fag is still quite nice sometimes, but the reality isn't!! x

Reply

Sounds like you are up for this then Kim :D

One month-any means to get there-when you get to one month you will have a totally different outlook on this. The fog that was is in front of your eyes will have cleared-then you can make a judgement based on reason, not because fags have brainwashed you.At the moment they have you in the addicts grasp

I'm pretty annoyed that i have become this addicted to something! It also annoys me that whenever i go outside i will smell smoke and i think about how i cant have one anymore. But having read Allen Carr i know i need to reprogram my brain its just not as easy as i thought it would be :\

No good promising it will happen 'cos some people still hanker for smokes,1 month,2,6 even 12 months later.Again in my opinion that is why we need an Allen Carr type input-he pulls the fog from your eyes.If you still smoke after that -well,good luck is all I can say.

I've tried to quit so many times before i'm determined that i wont be defeated this time and you guys are very much helping :)

Well done Kim, sounds like you're still doing a great job and staying off the fags! :)

One thing that helped me at my worst points was to visualise smoking the cigarette, like you have been doing, but ask yourself how it will really feel afterwards.

You'll bring it to your mouth, inhale (and probably have a bit of a coughing fit) then exhale slowly. You'll smile and breathe a sigh of relief for finally letting go and lifting the weight off your shoulders ... and that's it. After that you'll suddenly realise that it was so unremarkable you don't even know how it was so hard to stay away, then you'll feel guilty for letting yourself down. Then comes the feeling of weakness because you couldn't hold on to something you wanted to achieve so badly. You'll be reminded of how much it stinks and how the taste lingers in your mouth.

Before you know it the little s***bag nico-demon will be back to tap you on the shoulder and you'll be within his grasp once more. :(

This thought really helped me. Making lists in my head as to why I shouldn't smoke didn't work at all, but actually watching myself take a drag and realise the huge mistake has been enough to stop me lots of times in the past.

Don't forget to buy yourself a treat! You definately deserve one :) x

Lol i know, pretty sure i also have fairly messy eye liner too! I don't feel my best today thats for sure.

That definately makes sense, i know my mind romanticises them and leaves out all the crap stuff. Its the habit of turning to them when im stressed/ anxious which im finding pretty hard to break. Even though i know they wont help.

When you think about it 2 weeks is a pretty long time, good on you :)

I went to lunch and bought stuff and walked and i feel a little bit better now.

I've just started dieting - was binging on cheese on toast, bacon and all kinds of lovely but very unhealthy stuff but am on salads and sensible stuff for now.

Tell me about it, i was eating all sorts of rubbish and not really caring about the consequences. Now it nearly summer i feel like a bit of a whale! Good luck with the healthy eating - again i find myself thinking about bad food all the time just because i cant have it!

I'm doing pretty well hun, thanks for asking!!

Thanks Sarah,

I'll try this method out because like you just telling myself something doesnt always work. I'll imagine all those times i took a drag and it tasted horrible and wasnt enjoyable!

Thats good advice, i will get myself something when i've gotten through today :) x

It's tricky, on the one hand your mind is making you think of all the bits you enjoyed and on the other trying to scare you out of quitting - I've been there :/

Maybe just go outside and take a few deep breaths?

Am sure it was having enough time away from what stresses you to smoke a fag or two that helped me calm down rather than the fags I smoked!!

When you think about it 2 weeks is a pretty long time, good on you :)

Thanks hun - am going to be saving a month a year compared to old smoker me at this rate!!

I went to lunch and bought stuff and walked and i feel a little bit better now.

YAY!! Exercise helps loads, especially if it's sunny :D :D

Thanks!!

Even if we are a bit bigger this year, we're fitter and healthier 'cos we don't smoke any more. I'd rather be a size 10 non smoker than a size 6 smoker!!

Im really happy for you, its great that you can be around smokers and not want one anymore! x

You'll be here soon you know :) It just takes time - and you're already doing brilliantly, the month isn't that far away for you now :D :D

If anything for me being with smokers makes me more determined not to 'cos smelling them afterwards, their breath and the smelly smoke while they're having one isn't pleasant!!

It's really hard to write on here on my phone :/

I've got home and I still can't shake off my depressed mood and still feel like crying :( really don't want to go to the gym and mix with people but my friend is making me go.

I'm fairly tall, like 5'8 but I'm getting towards the top end of a size 14 and I feel pretty negative towards myself. It's hard not to eat junk when I feel like this.

A guy in my office said to me well when are you going to start smoking again and I said never and he said well I've heard all that before...

Hi Kim

Hang in there girlie, you can do this. Trust me if there is one thing I know it's that you don't want to start over again like me!! Have a look through my posts from start to finish if you've a mind and you'll see that you don't need all the cr*p I have put myself through.

In other words.... I never should have picked them up again and btw your co-worker is a real jerk for saying that to you.

Go to the gym and then maybe early to bed, sometimes it's a safe haven. Tomorrow will be much better, I just know it!

You got this, don't let go!

Hi Sherri,

Thanks for your support, I'll have a look back through your posts when I get a chance. I'm just worried I'm sounding a bit whingy and self absorbed right now :/

Early to bed sounds like a good idea though, so I'll very likely be doing that and hoping tomorrow is a better day!

A few people have said things like that to me and it dents my confidence even though I know I shouldn't listen to them.

How are you doing now hun? Good I hope :) thanks again for your post I really appreciate it

Hey, Im tall and a size 14!!!!! Watcha:). Seriously, we may well be that size, but we're smelling beautiful and sweet, fresh breath, clean teeth and fresh lenor smelling clothes!

So, most of us put on a bit of weight during this quit smoking malarkey, Listen up, we can address that and lose weight, that guy in your office will always be grumpy git:D

So, you,re doing fine, and I agree baths and early to bed is a good form of escapism in the early days.

Sherri is dead right Kim.

Quitting is hard, not quitting or quitting repeatedly is sheer Hell.

As for that guy in your office -well I would take what he said, gird your loins and dig in to scrap like mad.

Kim lean on us love,we have all been there and done this.Go to the gym,you don't have to go mad with exercises but the fact that you went will make you feel good later tonight.Gym and an early night. And don't worry if you are putting weight on,we ALL did that and most of us shed the weight once the curse of smoking is fully broken.

Chin up sweetheart ;)

Thank you Max :)

Yup I will use his comment as motivation to NOT give in to this demon that right now will not leave me alone.

You guys are really great and have helped me loads today. If I'd been left to my own devises in the past I would have given in by now x

Hi Fi,

You're right, I keep forgetting that I smell good now and don't have to cover up the horrible smell with loads of perfume and gum! The guy in my office stinks of stale smoke by the way...

Thanks for your positive words, they really do help me so much :)

Aww I am sorry Kim, it can be really really rough.

It's not what you want to do, but going out is probably the best thing right now - anything to take your mind off feeling down in the dumps and it'll give you a buzz when you get exercising!!

(( Hugs ))

I'm fairly tall, like 5'8 but I'm getting towards the top end of a size 14 and I feel pretty negative towards myself. It's hard not to eat junk when I feel like this.

I'm tallish too, and hey the extra weight doesn't matter that much right now!!

What matters is that you're a healthier, richer, sweeter smelling girl than you were 18 days ago!!

Try not to concentrate on the negatives, think about what a wonderful thing you're doing for yourself - know it can be hard, but honestly you *will* get through this!!

If you're ever that bored, lol, go and look up my early posts on this site - then look at how I am now - there's a total difference!!

A guy in my office said to me well when are you going to start smoking again and I said never and he said well I've heard all that before...

Well he's a git. An insensitive, stupid smug git - is he a smoker or a smug never smoker?

You know what to do, right? Prove him wrong

Show the smug insensitive prat that you will never smoke again :D

honestly hun, lots of people say stuff like that - it's human nature. My dad didn't say it at the time but when I told him I was quitting he gave it a week - 25 weeks later who's laughing?

Stick with it, and seriously it will get heaps better :)

Oh well he's jealous of you!!

It feels odd when someone says they're quitting - it's actually one of the few times I felt guilty about smoking 'cos i didn't usually - like they're doing it so you should as well.

He wants you to fail so he can feel better about his own failure to quit. Remember, every single smoker on one level or another wants to stop - we're the lucky ones 'cos we actually have!!

Hang in there Kim. Do not let that stupid, insensitive idiot get you down at all! Also don't worry about the weight gain at this stage. Just focus on not smoking. You are doing great and we are all here routing for you!

Everybody has been through, or is going through what you are - there's always someone to tell you what's likely to happen next, and to help you through the tough times. It's saved my quit loads of times!!

People letting me know what they have gone through is very helpful and it helps to remind me it won't last forever.

Cheers hun, I will try and not apologise :) I'm just really aware of myself at the moment if that makes sense. I think smoking helped me distract myself from worrying about what other people we thinkin about me when I'm out walking ect - I'm a bit crazy lol because they would have been like who's that gross girl smoking disgusting roll ups! Think when you quit it makes you more sensitive and more aware of things.

Don't worry about what other people think anyway, if they've got a problem, stuff them!!

Hope you have a better day tomorrow xx

Hey, I really feel everything you are saying. In those dark moments there only seems like one option doesnt there and that is 'good old fag, sort it out'....

You have the first puff like 'oh i shouldnt really.....'

but you puff again...by this point all those receptors are activated you get abit of a rush.

By the time you finish it you feel abit tired (lovely carbon monoxide for ya)

You put it out. and everything is exactly the same. you think well that was pointless....

you hope because you have gone so long you can get away with that one, until 40 minutes later, bang on time, craving knocks at the door asking you to have another. Then you realise....WHAT HAVE I DONE!?

DONT DO IT!! the smoking only ever gave you that feeling your getting now as a non smoker, it only stops withdrawal happening and thats it.

Good luck hun that worst bit is nearly over, Ive done 3 months as my longest and max is right, after a month you are well on your way.

Reply

It makes me feel more normal that you got teary too, its just not nice when it happens at work is it.

During the first couple of weeks I cried in a restaraunt and a grocery store for no real reason at all. Tears would just start streaming out of my eyes. I can laugh about it now. :D

I have also put on some weight - but it feels good knowing I will be able to breathe when I excercise.

DONT DO IT!! the smoking only ever gave you that feeling your getting now as a non smoker, it only stops withdrawal happening and thats it.

Good luck hun that worst bit is nearly over, Ive done 3 months as my longest and max is right, after a month you are well on your way.

Hi Nikki,

Thanks for your support. The longer it gets since I quit the easier its getting, when I'm feeling down or frustrated (like when I made this thread) I can't see past that moment but when it's passed I feel positive again and I really do realise I don't need them in my life!

Hope you're doing ok?

It makes me feel more normal that you got teary too, its just not nice when it happens at work is it.

During the first couple of weeks I cried in a restaraunt and a grocery store for no real reason at all. Tears would just start streaming out of my eyes. I can laugh about it now. :D

I have also put on some weight - but it feels good knowing I will be able to breathe when I excercise.

It's insane how much the emotions can't be controlled isn't it! I think I'm getting a lot better now I'm into my 4th week and its happening less often :p

There must be loads of quitters just wondering around crying and people wondering what the hell is going on!

That's very true, better to be healthy than slim!
