Hi all - I am attempting to collect data on the Jan 2012 quitters. As they go into the Penthouse ( how exciting for them ) I am adding their names to the list. The information I'm collecting about our fantastic, strong quit stars is how they quit. I've got info for some from their posts but not all.
We started out with 41 people on our list for Jan 2012. The celebrity Penthouse stars are:
Dapower Jan-01 *
ppat324 Jan-01* NRT
Tracy71 Jan-01*
Ace_Wisdom Jan-01* cold turkey
steelfixer Jan-07* cold turkey
pauloassis Jan11* NRT
1Bluetree Jan11* NRT
I would like to hear from the Penthouse Jan 2012 celebrities who we don't know the method of their quit. Also, if any of the celebrities would like to tell us about anything that really helped them then we would love to hear about it.

Thank you 1Bluetree for your information. It will certainly help those people who want to quit yet are not sure how to start. NRT certainly helped you in the initial stages when quitting can seem overwhelming.
You made it to 1 year so you have credibility and your story will help others.
Good evening nonico could I join your group of quitters retrospectiveley. I actually stopped smoking from a hospital bed on Sunday the 22/1/2012 at about 13:00 in Glasgow Western Infirmary. Amazing what you can remember when they start strapping the cardiac monitoring gear on to your body my reaction being sh.. this is serious. Fortunately it turned out to be stable angina which is relatively easy to treat. So I was discharged from hospital with some heavy duty advice about stopping smoking ringing in my ears which I have managed to do up to press.
I quit using N.R.T. and smoking cessation classes.
However I did not come across the Forum until sometime in early March and have found the Forum very helpful.
So I would be obliged if you could add me to your list of January 2012 quitters not from any sense of smugness but as an example that quitting smoking is possible.
Congratulations lefoy 123 on quitting. Yes, I'll be glad to add you to the list. You even get a star next to your name since you're a star yourself for quitting.
lefoy 123 Jan22*
That brings the total of the Jan 2012 quitters to 42, and you lefoy 123 will improve the percentage of the success rate.
I succeed with the cold turkey although I had my moments, nearly at the end of my first month on a 4 day piss up but never caved and oddly half way through the year I actually had a unlit ciggie in my mouth outside the pub but couldn't lite it as I knew there was a total shitty feeling waiting for me after the first drag, I gave it my mate back and went back inside, it was me that asked for the fag as well, I guess in a lucky way I'd just gone over the hill of craving frenzys by the that point, if it was a couple of weeks earlier I reckon things might have been so different and I wouldn't posting in here with a penthouse membership on my signature.
If there was anything that really did bother me was mt chest, after the quit it went really tight like a goes worse before gets better type of thing but it did get better till a couple of months after, I wasn't ill it did concern me though at the time.
I started out with the 14 mg patch as I get welts from them. I knew it would be tough as I was up to 3 packs of fags a day but always had twizzlers or cheese puffs in hand. After 10 days I took the patch off and went cold turkey. I was quite surprised at how smoothly my quit has been ( most of the time)...ppat
I found more information on the quit method - shown below
Dapower Jan-01 * cold turkey
ppat324 Jan-01* NRT
Tracy71 Jan-01* NRT
Ace_Wisdom Jan-01* cold turkey
steelfixer Jan-07* cold turkey
pauloassis Jan11* NRT
1Bluetree Jan11* NRT
From the data I have, of those who quit from Jan 1 - Jan 11, the success rate is 44%. It will be interesting to see what it is for the total month of January. Another interesting thing, although purely anecdotal at the moment, is that men seem to prefer cold turkey and women prefer NRT. No one yet has used Champix but I know that there are some to come later on in January.
The quit rate for early starters in the month is prob that high as everyone's still hungover and stuffed full of turkey and all feel sick. plus no Jan bills have landed by that time Just a laugh but could be a theory in there somewhere.
From the data I have, of those who quit from Jan 1 - Jan 11, the success rate is 44%. sorry - that should read 29% - still pretty good. I had taken the total number as those who'd quit on Jan 01.
Still, 29% very good going. I would say being a member of this forum must contribute.
Hi 1Bluetree - I don't know of any records that have been kept. However, if the Jan 2012 group is the first to record their data then they hold the record.
I got that idea from the weather here in Australia at the moment. Just about every night on the news someone will say "today, such and such a place reached the highest temperature ON RECORD". So, the Jan 2012 group may have the most entries to the Penthouse on record.
Can you believe it 1Bluetree? We could be record holders. Oprah will be making a come back to interview us.
Thank you Biggrin, Aitch, Karri, Molly 1970, Lance Reed & lostie for your kind words.
It's great to be quit & I know for a fact now that I have the statistics to prove it that being on this forum with people like you is what makes becoming a non-smoker a reality.
Lance Reed is already in the Penthouse with me, but I'll see the rest of you in there soon.
Woohoo Nonico well done on reaching the Penthouse! So chuffed for you and thanks for all the advice and posts youve made on the forum - they really do help to show us earlier in our quits that we really can do it!!
Yes, I'm thrilled to be in the Penthouse. As far as parties - I've been partying all year since I always have an excuse for a "treat" now that I'm saving money. I've saved nearly $6,000, and I don't know how I used to find that sort of money. Smoking is an expensive habit alright.
I think I have many threads on reaching the Penthouse with the January 2012 quitters going. It's great to be an ex-smoker and I don't think I would have got this far without this forum - it told me what to expect.

The forum is great, especially in the early days!!
If Rochelle & Capitan were to enter the time portal ( the foyer of the Penthouse has one ) they would be in the Penthouse in just over 2 hrs Australian time. Congratulations on making it.

Yes Karri - the data on NRT/CT surprised me too. Next time there is a debate on NRT vs CT then I think the data from this thread needs to be quoted. They are equal in their success rate.
On other thing surprises me is that CT is preferred by a large % of males and NRT by a large % of females. I have a theory that this is due to the fact that women smokers always have a greater amount of nicotine in their body than men. Apparently this is due to the extra fatty tissue under the skin since nicotine is fat soluble. It may well be that the 3 days to get rid of nicotine from the body is different for men and women, and it may be why many women find it harder to go CT.
Come to think of it, many of the posters who are against NRT are men. Next time it happens they need to be careful!! Someone might just tell them to shut up and go and grow a uterus.
One other surprising thing is the low number using Champix, but then again this may simply be due to the fact that it's new to the market.
That's interesting about Champix, Karri. I had never heard anything at all about Champix from the media. I had never seen any advertising at all whether it was good or bad.
A friend told me that there was this drug that made you not want to smoke, and you needed a prescription. I went to the doctor for a prescription, and the rest is history.
Once I was taking it and I started to google Champix I read about the possible effects, but I never believed them because it wasn't affecting me.
I think Champix is great - it certainly worked for me. I wouldn't say it was a magic pill - the cravings were still there - but the edge was certainly taken off the cravings. The feeling I had all the time was one of " I could have a cigarette, and would probably like one" but I wasn't desperate for a cigarette.
Hi Lostie - I finished the Champix months ago. I think I was on it for about 3 months or so. I had no problems coming off it or while I was on it.
The weather in Brisbane is horrendous. Winds & blanketing rain - I've never seen it like this before. We've been told ( TV ) to expect flooding from rivers tomorrow night. I'm OK, I"m not in any flood area - I just can't leave the house since the rain and wind are just too heavy.

I think it's great you've looked into the data for the January quitters and yes a few surprises, but with my scientific head on the numbers aren't significant to make any real claims compared to national data. Very interesting though, what we also don't know is how these people would have fared on their quit method without the forum. Maybe there is no difference between the quit methods as it is the forum which made the difference? Who knows? Interesting stuff though!
Karri, I didn't say that the data wasn't collected scientifically, what I said was the numbers in each group are too small to have any statistically significant value.
Yeh I don't use the forums as much as others but people have different lifestyles and I may not be online all the time. lol
As for the forum working and making a difference I posted a long time ago that it does make a difference, I've tried a few time to quit and always stalled on something although I always felt I was close, this forum and the people on it with posts and reading experiences certainly helped so I'm 100% saying yes and I believe it was was the last ingredient to my quit as all the other quits have been the same route and so has this one apart from this time I was on the forum in spells some longer than others but look at me now....
12 months + without a cig, a non - smoker, it also maybe the reason why I keep popping back in although I don't smoke anymore, reading your posts and one thing that defo helps is looking once a week at peoples posts in day 1.

Totally agree with Steelfixer on this one
I agree with you too
Am sure I'd be a smoker again if it wasn't for this place and all the help people give!!
I would like to add that this forum has helped me in my quit. It has always been good to be able to come on here and have some one to talk to that has been through what we have been through and will support us.
I had my 1st test of strength against smoking on Dec. 31...Exactly 1 year from my last cigarette. I was in Texas and my kids smoke but never around me so I wasn't bothered by smoke anymore. Well, I hurt my back and had to come back home for emergency surgery. I get in the truck from the airport and the boyfriend is smoking and the first thing I see on the dash is a pack of smokes. I have to admit...I was so tempted. I even picked one up and put it in my mouth. But, I was smart enough to know that smoking a fag was not going to help the excuriating pain I was in. In fact, if I would of coughed from that fag I would of been in more pain.
I am proud to say that I am coming up on 13 months smoke free this Friday!!! WOHOO!!!!!!...ppat
Congratulations on staying quit for 1 year, and then resisting temptation. Now that you mention it, it is a recurring theme this being tempted after being quit for 1 year. I've heard it from quite a few people now. So, January 2012 quitters BEWARE, the sub-conscious loves us to get complacent, and the 1 year milestone is a challenge to the sub-conscious.
I'm still here and passed the one year milestone on 19th of January. I don't use the forum much now ,but still pop my head in now and then to see how everyone's doing. Enjoying the scenery from the penthouse hope you all are too.

7 Ct and 7 NRT...its a draw I would have thought CT would have won but I stand corrected, for me I just found NRT harder as I failed a hell of alot on NRT .though maybe it could have been my frame of mind that changed me who knows, its quite hard to remember exactly how I felt at the time.
Well done to you all that made it to the penthouse 38percent is a great reault
Well looks as if I am the last one of the Jan quitters to report in one year complete as of 8am this morning. Good luck to all the new Jan quitters. can you beat 38%? I bet you can. Good luck all
Hi all -Good luck to future quitters- I'm sure if another group decides to keep track of their progress 38% will be easily matched if not bettered.
Please note - for data accuracy reasons only - on gina1506's signature, her quit date is Jan 30 2011 - this is a typo - I've looked at past posts - it is Jan 30 -2012.
Just wanted to verify that our grand total for Jan 2012 is 16/42.
Can't wait to see another group do a roll call like 1Bluetree did ages ago, and then for someone to keep an update on the data. I'd like to see 38% beaten
