Good & Bad.....

The good news..... ive now been quit for 1Year 9months;), always thought that this was the best thing anyone could do for their health - and it is..... but, in my case stopping smoking triggered off a bad event too, and that was the start of a chronic autoimmune disease called Ulcerative Colitis :(

It was never explained that there could be side effects of quitting..... i mean, how could there be?!!! This seems to be the only exception that i am aware of, and trust me to get it! And get this.... some people with this disease start smoking again to STOP the flare-ups of it!!! Crazy!

So i find myself in a catch22 situation... there is higher risk of colon cancer, and 1in3 chance of the need of surgery- and nicotine can prevent this, but if i have nicotine........well, you lot know the whole situation there! :(

Sorry to bring a negative to these threads...... but i just wanted to share info that people dont know about.....

God Toto, that absolutely sucks. It's horrible that doing something so good for your health can actively trigger something so bad.

I've been reading some scholarly papers and they seem to suggest that treatment with nicotene patches can reduce symptoms, and might work as an alternative to steroids as a form of active treatment. So technically speaking, you might be able to use nicotene therapeutically without starting smoking again. Now you've broken the smoking habit, do you think you'd be able to use nicotene through a patch or something and avoid the impulse to light up?

I notice there are a lot of forums for sufferers - maybe you should ask around, see if ex smokers have tried this route and been successful?

Really sorry to see that fate has dealt you such a nasty blow when you've stuck it out and had such a successful quit. I hope you find a way to deal with it without compromising what you've achieved.

Best wishes xxx

Its weird, because when symptoms started, i just thought that now im a non smoker they would pass given that i must now be healthier, and I put up with them maybe longer than i should have done!

There are a few studies that say its not just the nicotine, but the carbon monoxide too that stop flare-ups..... but the way i look at it..... worst case scenario, i could need the colon removed, which would mean wearing a pouch forever, but could live a normal life with it..... if the lungs are so bad they dont work well thats it.... and i really wouldnt fancy having a stroke either, so the benefits of quitting still outweigh the one benefit (for me) of smoking.

Fingers crossed my meds work, and i fall into a long remission:)

Toto, my cousin has had that for about 40 years. The good news is that he hasn't needed a bag yet and leads a very full and busy life traveling all over the world. It certainly hasn't held him back. I hope it all works out for you too. Good luck
