Stats below from DoH.

"The Treasury earned £9.5 billion in revenue from tobacco duties in the

financial year 2011-2012 (excluding VAT). This amounts to 2% of total

Government revenue. Including VAT at an estimated £2.6bn, total tobacco

revenue was £12.1bn. The price of a pack of 20 premium brand cigarettes

currently costs around £7.45, of which £5.80 (78%) is tax."

Some stats from ASH:

"Research commissioned by ASH has shown that the cost to the NHS of treating diseases caused by smoking is approximately £2.7 billion a year.6 Another study put the estimated cost as high as £5.2 billion"

So Treasury making around 7b profit per year from smoking. Quite mind blowing numbers arent they?

I wonder, if the government got it's so called wish of eradicating smoking for good, how they would replace the 7b? quite a scary thought really. Something esle would have to give? deeper cuts at the NHS as we wont need so much from it as no more smoking related illnesses? i dont think so.......

cheers

It does make you think, if everyone stopped smoking then where would they get all their money from. How much more have we put into the government over our smoking lives than our non smoking friends. I wouldn't mind if it had actually done some good but to look at the way things are in the country at the minute it makes you question what has been done with all that extra money?

yes, it costs the NHS c.5b per year but the g'ment makes c.12b in taxation. Now, where does that 7b go and what would the g'ment do without it?

That's a mighty big hole to fill, especially in the trying times.

this thread is ripe for conspiracy theories.........:

No it will never be a smoke free country. It'll never be illegal. The g'ment just need to show they are doing the "right" thing in trying to encourage people to quit.

karri -as for your obese, kfc eating alcoholic, he will be added to the the smoking stats and the alcohol stats and the obesity stats. He a full house!

A smoke free Britain by 2032?

Pay attention to the poor lady at the start and end of this report. Shocking state to be in and a good reminder of why we are all here on this forum...

i hope and pray i have halted or at least massively slowed down any awful illness in my future

when i smoked the twisted logic made my brain think that illness was inevitable because i took that risk and smoked

but now i can not believe how ridiculous those thoughts were how could i have quite literally put my life in the balance every 30-40 minuites

our governments just wants to look good on the anti smoking campaigns they need the cash to much they dont want anything to be too successful, afterall alan carr was dismissed by governments, most government campaigns play on the fact quitting is very very hard and as a smoker that in its self is a good excuse not to quit [watch the adverts as a non smoker you notice the wording much more]

remember the one with the guy trying to clean an upstairs window whilst bouncing on a trampoline i mean how much harder does it get lol

i think it is all portrayed wrongly the adverts saying how hard it was certainly kept me smoking because i was to scared that i couldnt quit cause it was so hard and then that gave me an bril excuse to carry on

i just know as a weak minded smoker it takes very little to convince you to maintain the habit afterall its less people reaching old age and not needing a pension as far as the government is concerned its a no brainer for them

They definately cant "do away" with smoking, despite the missed revenue, they wouldnt be able to subsidise all the additional costs of people living longer. There would be 100,000s less deaths each year and no funds to help finance society.

Overall, smoking is just a way of "culling" the poplulation and making money for the government, the sooner we all wisen up the better.
