Hi well done for getting this far!

I didn't use anything when I stopped but only because I was ill the first two days, or I'm sure I would have done! I only really missed day one though, just had to plough through the first week, "Hell Week" it gets called on here which is quite apt I thought!

I read this forum an awful lot.........I ate a lot of sweets, drank a lot of pop and tea, did a lot of gardening (!) and overall kept reminding myself WHY I wanted to stop, all the health reasons, thought of my kids, just got stubborn and refused to give in.

I had read that after three days the body is nicotine free, so that was my target, just an hour at a time, then the second and third days, then on after that.

People will say, and it is true, that it gets easier, give your body, then your mind, time to adjust....after 22 constant years I haven't had a cigarette for 37 days, which is, frankly, a miracle....:)

Hi guys it has now been 17 hours and 27 minutes without a ciggie and i am really struggling even though i am using a electronic cigarette and inhalator. How long is it till it gets easier?

That's an interesting question.

The subconscious prompt to smoke is being answered by the ECig and you're consuming enough nicotine to stave off that flu-like withdrawal.

So why are you struggling? What are you struggling with?

Remember that your body, well your brain, is a lying, cheating, scumbag.

It’s not something I gave a lot of thought to before I gave up smoking but you need something like quitting to focus your mind.

Your brain will introduce fear of quitting concepts even before you’ve quit. You can smoke your “last” cigarette and less than five minutes after finishing it start feeling the effects of withdrawal: achy muscles, anxiety, shaky hands, panic. That’s just after five minutes. While the nicotine (that you’re addicted to hoho) from the last fag was still meandering around your bloodstream and ambling its way towards your brain.

People who happily sleep smoke-free for eight hours have trouble consciously not smoking for an hour.

Real physical withdrawal symptoms manifest themselves without the body being deprived of the drug. It’s no wonder that quitting smoking can be difficult.

Fear of quitting is like fear of falling. How high do we have to climb before fear kicks in?

If I’m feeling adventurous at work I can spend the afternoon climbing between desks without much fear of terminal demise. Similarly I can let junior leap between beds in the Travelodge without being considered a poor parent. However, start to raise them from the ground and there becomes a point where leaping four feet between desks becomes a most daring proposition. The relative positions of the desks hasn’t changed but the brain, working on some automated self-preservation setting, decides that eight foot is just ok, but eighty feet is out of the question.

I do know the answer mind.

It gets easier when you understand why you smoke.

It can be 'easy' from day 3. For some, it never gets easy. :(

... and an interesting answer austin. The fear factor is what makes us continue smoking in the first place and a difficult step to overcome. Once the decision has been made that's one giant leap behind us. :)

Good luck Kerry!

how long before it gets easier

Hello Kerry 27 that's the $64000 question. Try not to think of a finite time when it will get easier. Instead keep it in the day, the hour even the minute if necessary. Mentally it's a lot easier to think I'll stop for the next few minutes rather than I'll stop a hour it doesn't seem as daunting and believe it or not the minutes will go into hours, the hours into days, the days into weeks etc etc etc.

Also, try and keep yourself busy paricularly something which uses your hands.

So Kerry 27 all the best with your quit and keep the faith you can do it.

I told myself when I quit that I was only quitting for 2 weeks. I told myself I could smoke again in 2 weeks if I wanted. The truth is if you go 2 weeks you won't (I didn't) want to waste all my effort on nothing.

To be honest..it kind of sucks to quit..I won't lie. But then again..lying in the hospital dying on a lung respirator would to.. So which would you rather?

You and everyone else on here can do it. Just beat one craving and one symptom at a time and it gets easier.

For me I am on day 26. I've had good days and bad days. But I had them smoking too.

Just take deep breaths, get your vitamins and minerals, try anti-anxiety herbs, eat some bananna's go for walks and chew some gum. You can do it.

bananas .. ?

I didn't know that bananas contained calming properties so got to doing a bit of research and found this..

'What Do Depression, Dark Chocolate, Vitamin D, Anxiety, Bananas, Turkey, Salmon, Sunlight, and Exercise All Have in Common?

Answer: they might have something to do with whether or not you experience high or low serotonin levels.

And what is serotonin?

Serotonin in the brain has a basic personality. “It’s a molecule involved in helping people cope with adversity, to not lose it, to keep going and try to sort everything out,”

From what I can gather, bananas, turkey, salmon, dark chocolate, sunlight, and exercise might also help elevate serotonin.'

yum .. could be a good diet in there somewhere
