I wondered if there was a link to smoking and IBS. I recently stopped smoking back in January, put on a well needed 2 stones, but started smoking again 5 weeks ago. I have started to lose weight again, not eating as much as I was, but also because IBS has set in.
Does anyone know if smoking causes IBS?

Nicotine is definitely an irritant on the bowel. It has a laxative effect? I would consult your doctor though..... unless he has already diagnosed IBS. I suppose you could always quit again!
Stopping smoking definitely has an effect on your system. I haven't smoked for 5 months now and my body still isn't functioning properly, sometimes with really bad constipation. It's probably just your body still trying to sort itself out, get a rhythm back in place and get used to the fairly rapid weight gain. Definitely speak to your doctor, but definitely stop smoking again, you've done so well so far!!!! Good luck with it all x
Cheers guys, I have a new prescription for Champix waiting at the doctors. I'll be starting again over the coming weekend, but I always had problems when I smoked prior to quiting. When I had stopped, the IBS seemed to ease.
