Hello everyone. I am a new member to the forum. I am planning my quit very soon but I find my big problem is getting through day 1. I am planning to use patches and quickmist to start and gradually cut down the amount of nicotine I am taking in. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on getting through the dreaded 1st day and maintaining the quit. I have started to keep a journal of my thoughs and feelings as I prepare to embark on what I hope will be my final quit. Any help that can be offered will be greatly appreciated. (I am planning to quit on Sunday)

Hi Mark

Great choice you've made - not to smoke!

Maybe you should try cutting up the early days into sections. Say into hourly or 2 hourly sections and just concentrate on getting through those - and before you know it a week would have gone by.

I think a person should use whatever they need to get through the early days - so don't worry just yet about cutting back on the nicotine - that will happen at some point, but just concentrate on the right here and now.

Good luck - and keep this forum open all the time - it is great when you're having a bad crave - !

Hi Mark.

I'm not an expert but I can tell you what's helped me. I've just made it to day 10 and it's getting much easier !

I made sure there were lots of things I could do to distract myself .. Reading didn't work so well as I couldn't concentrate for long initially. Walking, getting out and changing your routine helps avoid those triggers.

Lots of snacks .. my body seemed to translate nicotine cravings into hunger pangs ! Stay away from sweets and go for healthier stuff like pumpkin seeds and nuts. Sipping cold water helps occupy your hands and apparently helps flush your system quickly.

Dont drink alcohol yet.. It wont help relax you it will just weaken your resolve.

Fellie is right, dont make this harder than it needs to be. Take baby steps and just concentrate on the next hour or so.

I had some trouble sleeping .. nytol has helped.

I've still got a long way to go but I promise you it's so much easier just in the space of 10 days.

Best of luck with your quit !

Paul.
