Hello. I just found this forum after trying the new year thing and failing miserably. I know I need to stop smoking but can't seem to do it. Why am I so weak willed? Can anybody help?

Regards,

Eddy

Hi Eddy and welcome first of all please try not to put yourself down hecause you gave into temptation :( most people dont succeed on there first or even third try at giving up at the end of the day if it was that easy there wouldnt be forums or products to help you to quit you just need to ask yourself " Do i want to be a slave to something that harms my body inside and out and costs me money" if you say no then you need to make a plan of action read up on all the nrt available if you feel you cant do it without you could even take the first step by making an appointment at your doctors with the quit nurse or ring up the helpline for this forum

Your the only one that can take that first step and once you do then you can decide how much help you need everyone on this forum are from every step of the way so you will get as much support as you need

Education is the way forward relearning how to be in control of your life instead of a poisonious white burning stick

Onwards and upwards

Hi Martin sorry to say that only your dad can make that decision about quitting the only thing you can do is to support him trying to get him to stop can make him more determined not to stop  i know thats hard to take but when your a smoker your mindset is set its like any addiction be it booze or drugs you cant see the woods for the trees so to speak and you have to have your own personal wake up moment to see smoking for what it really is

you could try and get him to read some of the links related to smoking or watch some of the videos on you tube some of them are really upsetting and might work but at the end of the day its all down to him to make that choice :(

Thank you Carol62 for your helpful advice, especially the part about not being a slave to something that is hurting me and costing me money. That hit home!! I will research some NRT products too as cold turkey is too scary for me  I have heard of the mouth spray and quite like the idea of that, does anyone have any experience with it or have found it helpful?

Hey Eddy,

Giving up is something you get good at. You need to ****yse the reasons you fail each time and next time do something to mitigate that. For example, I only attempted to give up because I had 1 week off work over Christmas, so I could effectively hide under the covers until I was over the worst, with no commitments to function that week at all. I would never have tried it on January 1st, because I'd be back at work again on January 3rd, and that would be bang in the middle of withdrawl. So for that reason I chose boxing day as day 1 :p.

Anyway that was a lesson learned from a previous quit!

and LOL - profanity checker doesn't like the word a-n-a-l-y-s-e!
