Pre-quit quakes ...

Welll, here we go then ... Tomorrow will be day 1 and I am sitting here rationing out my last few cigarettes (how pathetic!) - and suddenly having a crisis of confidence. I am as well prepared as I can possibly be, but know that the journey really only starts when I've stubbed out that last cigarette. Frankly, I think I might as well just get on with it, have an early night in my re-organised 'bedroom sanctuary' and stop worrying about what tomorrow will bring. Jeez - it can't be worse than everything whirling around in my imagination .... or can it?!

Wish me luck. Please!

Sue

It can't get you while you're sleeping

I went to bed v early for first 2 or 3 nights, it does help.

You'll be fine Sue, i bet you're the best prepared quiter ever.

It does get easier, i'm down to only about 10 frozen grapes a day now!!!

It could be worse, you could be Greek as well!!

Sue I think the thought of quitting is worse than actually doing it. Once you get going you sort of go onto auto pilot and keep going in spite of any bad feelings you get. And this time tomorrow you will feel so proud of yourself for completing Day 1:D

I can recommend the frozen grapes too, something to pop in your mouth and when they melt you get the vitamin rush:p

All the best for tomorrow,

Zoe

Here we go!!!

The thought of quitting is indeed worse but once you start then you realise that it's not as scary as you thought. Not to say it's a walk in the park- but you start to realise that there is a life without fags!!

Come join our NOPE November group- there is a warm welcome!!

Looking forward to being here with you on your quitting journey!!!

The fear of the quit was definitely much worse than the actual quit for me.

I did a lot of preparation beforehand, and I think I actually built it into an apocalypse-type event, which it really wasn't (otherwise I wouldn't still be here ;))

You'll be just fine :)

Huge thanks everyone - I KNOW I can't and won't go backwards, so I just hope my autopilot will indeed keep me going. And yes all this planning and preparation does indeed make me feel that there should be some sort of triumphant fanfare announcing that this is A VERY IMPORTANT EVENING/EVENT. All that is probably going to happen is that I will debate, for the next 10 minutes or so, whether to actually smoke my final cigarette or shove it under the tap to show it who is now in charge..... before reaching for the box of pre-frozen grapes.

Looking forward to joining the NOPEs tomorrow!

That's a tough one, in a sense. I went for the 'final smoke' at 5 to midnight, in a ritualistic kind of way, but I can see the 'under the tap' would also be a full stop, change of mentality idea.

Whichever way, I wish you the best for tomorrow/tonight :)

I must try this grape thing everyone is talking about...

Hi Karri - SO glad to have you on board - huge well done for sticking at it. Day 1 nearly done - and I'm off to bed soon too. Bit worried about tomorrow - but that's another day, and at least I have the novelty of waking up after both a smoke (and alcohol!) free day. That will be interesting..!

Take care,

x

Excellent - 'here we go' is off and going!

One day at a time. That is all you need to think about. Nothing else matters.

There's you, and there's a bunch of carcinogenic chemicals, some dried plant and a bit of paper. You're the one with the brain, the personality, and the life. Don't let the weed win.

Have a great day!

I've just posted on another thread about how helpful I've found it to have my mantras printed out and stuck around the house ... and have to say, Helen, that yours is my most inspirational. Which means there is barely a place in the house where I CAN'T see it!! Thank you.

Calamityjen - I decided to smoke my last one - but what an anti-climax! I've been planning this quit for so long it was almost a relief to get rid of it and get myself on the road...

I'm negotiating the potholes one at a time and trying hard not to look ahead or think about what might be round the next bend!

So far, so not-so-bad ...

Very cautiously optimistic (and quite proud!),

Sue

Go Girl..........

Fantastic ... just step over those pebbles Sue

Well my quit method is still being determined! I was OK with the idea of using some NRT (well, I say OK .... I suppose I mean I knew I'd be delaying the inevitable, but was keen to get going and not quite confident enough to go cold turkey from the start) but when I saw the nurse on Friday she wanted me to have 21mg patches as well as 1.5mg minis.

I couldn't for the life of me work out how I could need that much nicotine. Yes, I was a heavy smoker (25-30 a day) but only 0.1mg nicotine in each one. She just told me that smokers of 'ultra light' cigs tend to 'overcompensate' - but I remained a bit sceptical. So ... I haven't bothered with the patches. She'd told me I could use about 6 minis a day as well, so I'm just doing that. I'm trying to use them in the same way as any medication, ie on a regular (2-3 hourly) basis, rather than having one as a response to a craving.

I'd thought that mornings would be my big problem - but so far I'm finding evenings worse! Thankfully, that just strengthens my resolve to keep off my beloved red wine for a bit. A glass or two of that and I'd want a cigarette even MORE!

GTAT - my abstinence has the added advantage that I can indeed step (rather than trip/stumble/stagger) over those pebbles. I'll just keep plodding ....

Hope you sleep well Karri - here's to Day 3!

..couldn't give up wine and fags.....

Karri, you've summed it up brilliantly and that's exactly how I feel - the biggest problem for me is definitely in my head, and I need to get that part of the 'retraining' on a fairly even keel. So I don't mind using some NRT to get me started ... As you say, it's the results that matter, not the method.
