Quitting now.

It started with a desire to get into shape again and lose some weight ten weeks ago. I overhauled my eating habits and started with a run/walk schedule.

After two weeks of feeling the improvements in my stamina, though, it became less about weight and more about fitness, and although I'd be lying if I said I wasn't chuffed to bits about losing a stone so far, I'm at least equally pleased about being able to run for a while without puffing. Well, then I thought I could probably speed up the improvements by quitting smoking - so here I am.

I'm 25, I've been smoking for 4-5 years - sometimes less, sometimes more, from 3 cigarettes to a pack a day - and it's my first attempt at quitting.

I fully intend to continue my fitness plan and healthy eating habits while quitting, and though it's not my first priority any more, I'd also like to continue losing weight - I hope quitting won't interfere too much.

I finished off the current pack today (overindulging to the point where it wasn't really pleasant anymore - didn't want to remember my last one too fondly) and it's cold turkey from now on.

My reasons:

- Getting better at running, fitter and healthier

- Having more spending money

- Vanity

- I want to live forever. Or, failing that, I want to get as close as possible.

- Turning into a non-moralistic, non-judgemental ex-smoker ;)

- Proving something to myself

Biggest potential hurdle apart from the obvious:

I really like the aesthetics of smoking.

See you tomorrow in Day 1!

Thanks!

Unfortunately I had to postpone my first truly smoke-free day to tomorrow for the sake of science - I'm participating in an experiment and they didn't want potential nicotine withdrawal symptoms to interfere with my reaction times, so a friend donated a last cigarette in front of the lab building before the test.

The upside of the delay: I'll be spending the majority of the next three days being busy in a no-smoking environment, so I'll always have plenty of distraction until the evenings, which ought to make it easier. :D

fair's fair, in my big-boys-book-of-smoking-excuses that one isn't even mentioned.

I wonder if Lewis Hamilton's missing a trick here??

Yeah, it sounds very much like "the dog ate my homework", I admit. Still, my friend has few enough test subjects as it is, it was the last session, and since it cost me less than 24 hours, I figured it was alright.

New reason for quitting:

- Proving that my resolve is not so lacking that I can't even make it to one day (thanks for the additional motivation) :D

Hooray!!! And some extra encouragement!!

:) Hi there, just joined the forum today. Really, really happy to hear your resolve strengthened and you were not put off from doing what's important. I guess I've tried before to give up but I've never had a forum like this to chat on so I think it will make big difference.

One of my more successful attempts at giving up happened on a mountain biking weekend away where no one smoked and I was wheezing halfway through while my cilia and lungs repaired themselves. You know I really wish I'd kept going then and not have been put off by pointless and illogical arguments that seem reasonable only by the sheer fact you're fighting off cravings. Watch the old 'it's only one' argument, that's gotten me a few times:mad:. Never be afraid to allow a mistake, I think that to keep moving on your intended path is more important.

You'll do wellxxx
