Help me, has anyone used Zyban? I start today. Think its my 8th (lost count) quit attempt. I really want to do this, just can't picture myself smokefree.

Not used zyban but best piece of advice i've been given is don't try to think too big..i.e. forget about "imagining yourself smokefree", just dont smoke for today...or if that seems too much, just dont smoke the next hour.

Using this tactic some people are so surprised when they actually manage a day it gives them a mental boost as they realise they CAN do it and then imagining a smokefree you becomes a little easier

Hope that helps:) Good luck

It's always the easy one to say but just try not to think about it! As Lula says breaking the day down in to chunks will help. Also try to adjust any other little routines you have throughout the day as that I'll also help divert your mind. E.g. I always drive to work via route A as there's a petrol station where I'd buy cigarettes, I'll now go via route B. Route B has pay at pump so I'll not have to go in the shop. I try to walk around a park near the office to stretch my legs at lunch, instead of walking anti clockwise as I've always done, when I'm on a quit I walk clockwise.

All things that keep you diverted a little.

Like your style, am going to choose a day next week to stop. I need to stop as docs said my lungs not working at the level they should be for an asthmatic (GOOD REASON! ). Also have second child due august and want to stop before then, just keep delaying the quit. Its bloody hard isn't it?

Hell yes - i am the QUEEN of delaying quit...for reasons ranging from "i dont like the date today" to "there's something on tv i want to watch tomorrow and i want to be able to smoke when i watch it so i'll quit after that":o

Genuinely dont know how people do it, am literally just trying to get through each bit as it comes and hopefully that feeling of "I never want to smoke again" that i've heard about will hit me sooner or later:o

You have some great reasons for quitting so keep them forefront in your mind and read the links in people's signatures - i've found those really helpful in making me WANT to quit. Good luck

So u a new quitter? How u feeling? How many times have u tried? What are your reasons? Im getting fed up with trying to quit and failing, just wish I could do it. Its just well hard

Hi alfie

You can do it!

I know that thought of never smoking again. I am on Day 7 and the thought of never having another cig scares me senseless!!

I always associate smoking with having fun and good times. It's not a night out / a holiday / a wedding / Christmas - ANYTHING WITHOUT a cigarette.

I presume / hope that over time that feeling fades. It must do eventually!

Good luck with your quit! :)

Yep - just started day 2. Have managed 5 days before a couple of times but that's it.

Since Jan 17th this year i have tried to quit about 9 times i think!! Ranging from a few hours success to 5 days, but never, so far a full week.

Reasons are 1. Money (getting married this year) 2. Health - obviously 3. stigma - sick of feeling bad about myself/having to wonder when i can smoke/worrying about smelling of cigs

So i have plenty of good reasons - dunno what's wrong with me - everyone else seems to manage it ok! And what drives me mad is before each quit i'm so sure i'm ready and i so WANT to do it - but i cant hang on to those feelings once i am quit! We'll see how it goes this time:p

Completely know what you re sick of trying and failing!!!

I know what you mean about not being able to hang on to those confident feelings before quitting. Maybe we should write a list about why we doing it? Just to prompt us. I have managed 4 months twice, then screwed up. I have got to do it,

OK the key to a successful quit is for it not to be a quit IMO. If you're quitting then you're going to be thinking about the quit, which inherently will make you think about smoking.

Try anything you can as a diversion technique. Podcasts worked for me in my last quit (6 months). I listened to them at work for the first few weeks. Just listening to subject matter that interested me kept me drifting over to the smokey side.

Not that it'll help you much Alfie but i used Zyban about 18months ago...........and failed

Think i've used ever bit of mumbo jumbo magic potion to quit over the years in my wish to stop smoking......... now there's the key, "in my wish"...... for my quit to succeed that "wish" had to be a "want".

I'm now 2 months and 15 days smoke free because i WANT to be. It's a case of preparing and retraining the mind, that's the secret of many successful quits.

Use whatever tool you need to if it gives you comfort during the early days/weeks (i had the Nicorette Inhalator for a short period to take the edge off) but without the mental homework/training before hand (and the help from this forum, thanks guys :D) i would have failed at day one as i had so many times in the past.

As has been said so many times on here, read, prepare, read, read, read, now quit!.............then i think you'll be pleasantly surprised quitting isn't the ogre we all feared.

Good Luck.

Champix

Hi ChamperPete

Not used Zyban before, but Champix is the newest drug out for stopping smoking.

I have no side effects other than a few dreams, a little disturbed sleep pattern but not enough to tire me out.

I am on day 8, so started on the bigger dose, between day 8-14 you give up smoking, I have 5 left in my packet and after they have gone I WILL NOT BE SMOKING EVERY AGAIN! (that was said with real attitude, LOL).

Hi Alfie, just wanted to reply to you and say your not alone in thinking that you cant picture yourself smoke free. I was like that five months ago today. I smoked for 30 years and honestly enjoyed all of them. I have tried many times to quit smoking and never got any further than 4 months so this time is the longest for me. I find every new thing i do a challenge without my cigs as they were my constant companion in all i did.( including in the bath with a glass of wine ). There was no place that i failed to smoke in. I want to tell you that it does get easier as time goes on and that you will one day go hours and then days without even thinking about fags. Trust me i never believed i could do it but i am and im as possitive today as i was the day i quit. so good luck to you and never give up trying. YOU WILL GET THERE IN THE END. :)

I have no experience of zyban either. Just take it bit by bit and it will get easier. I could never imagine myself not smoking but a month down the line I am still doing it and every day I find myself thinking about it less and less.
