  • Keep strong. Just say no. You have done so well, do you really want to throw it all away? I just posted the following on another thread, but it is relevant here:

As someone who gave up for a year plus twice and ended up smoking again each time, please realise you cannot have a puff.

My problem each quit was having a moment of weakness, having a few and then nothing for over a month, then the next moment of weakness having a few again...this pattern only leads to smoking full time again - trust me!

Get back on the wagon and say never again, rather than thinking how well you did to have a few then stop again - think how fortunate you are and how strong you are - think of this as your last chance saloon - you cannot play again!

My mum has quit smoking for 30 years now (she quit when she found out she was pregnant with me) she told me recently she STILL has smoking dreams once in a blue moon (especially since I came back with my habit) and that she is absolute in her belief in NOT ONE PUFF EVER.

I absolutely am in agreement with my mum - if you have one puff you are on the road back to 20+ a day. I have done it several times now. One puff, and it may be 6 months down the line, but eventually I was back to 20 a day. So please, recognise your mistake, get back on the wagon and do not believe if you manage another month you can have the 'odd one'. That is the nicodemon talking!

So, please stay strong, please think of those you influence - everyone who quits is one less person children see smoking and that is one less excuse for them to think smoking is ok. Remember to most teenagers starting the habit we look ancient - so they think well they have survived, I will be fine - please do not be their excuse!

  • thanks jo

its hard today, ive been doing all the stuff i connect to being a smoker, i drive, pull into a layby, simple choice, a cig, or a coffee, the coffee is the choice, but how much coffee can i do, tonight im trying alcohol, i have so many things in my life that are connected to smoking,

  • Yes and one of them could be dying, stay smoke free and live life to the full, these times will pass and I PROMISE you will find you feel better.

Dont let it get the better of you as it would only be a temporary thing and then you would want to quit again, x

  • Alan,

I understand - it is so hard, wish I was there to give you a hug and a kick up the butt! I replaced the cigs with beer, now the beer with wine! Hoping fairly soon to replace them with something constructive! Regardless not smoking makes you feel so much better and you know it! Keep strong, go to sleep if necessary, but smoking is, no matter what, going to make you feel worse.

One thing I do know is I am going through some of the toughest times of my life without cigs, so really, I know me, and everyone else CAN do it, it might be hard but just pretend you are a masochist in training!!!
