how much weight have you put on?

mini007 profile image

I've put on about 28lbs since feb :) and now weigh 227lbs, its still creeping up though i think. Bought a pair of trousers yesterday in my "usual" size and i cant get them on lol, if it were even possible to button them i would probably take someones eye out when the threads snapped.

It seems the time has come to educate myself about healthy eating

HI,

I quit in March and have put on quite a few pounds - although I am unwilling to even go near a set of scales for fear of what they may say...

I have noticed that since quitting I have got a sweet tooth and now have started to crave chocolate....something that I never had when I smoked - I could take it or leave it.

Am hoping that it does start to ease of sometime soon, especially seeing as Christmas is coming up....

Just over half a stone here, and just like you, I seem to have developed a taste for things I never even took any notice of when smoking.

Trying to exercise a bit now which is bringing it down slowly. Going on hols in 2 weeks, all inclusive to Mexico, so that's not going to do me any favours is it??

Never mind, I just keep telling my OH that there's more of me to love, but I have promised there won't be much more :o

Lorraine :)

Hi mini

I am like you I have gained 30lb in a year, and have now started the long road to start losing it again. I have only been dieting for 2 weeks and lost 3lb so I think its on the turn.

Nicotine is an appetite suppressant and I am sure like me, many of you reached for a fag with your tea/coffee and not a biscuit. Like Nicki I developed a love of chocolate and weirdly crisps which I previously hated. The efffects of nicotine on your body and mind take a very long time to completely clear and I was told several times in hospital that it would take me the year to feel totally better. I have to say they were right, I do feel loads better now, I no longer worry that I will have another cig because I won`t, I can now say NO to a biscuit and I feel so much better healthwise.

My advice is go with your quit first and foremost as a top Cardiologist said to me " I would rather you gain 5 stone than smoke again as far as your heart is concerned". The time will come when you feel more in control and then the diet can start.

Good luck to you all,

Dee:)

Hi

At the beginning of the year I was smoking and about 18 and a half stone. Technically I was obese. Which was depressing. I quit the fags nearly 7 months ago and went on a diet. After 2 months I'd lost very little weight but had gained alot of energy as I was breathing properly for what felt like the first time in years. So in a moment of madness I joined a gym. The first 10 times I went I really felt like I was about to have a heart attack but I kept going and kept pushing myself. That was 5 months ago and currently I'm going 5 times a week. Its hard to find the time but its so worth it.

So to answer the question: I was 18.5 stone, I'm now just over 15 stone so I've lost around 3-3.5 stone since quitting smoking. I hope this does'nt come across as either "preachy" or "gloaty" but by changing my addiction from smoking to running and the gym I've improved every single aspect of my life.

Time to 'fess up - I haven't seen my feet for months, and admitted defeat and bought bigger trousers 4 or 5 months ago. When I plucked up the courage to weigh myself I'd gained 20 lbs. I've started to rein in my snacking in the last month and am down 2 lbs. Now my OH is hinting that it's time to get back to normal as there's a "bit much of me" to be comfortable so the diet looms (first time in my life I've had to think about what I eat)

Ermmm is this a trick question to get us all to admit that giving up smoking has made us all a bit porky, ok I admit the fact that I having just been in the bathroom and weighed myself and I have put on exactly 5 kg (doesn’t sound quite so much in kg) in 10 months so now realise I need to lose some to get back to where I was or as close as I can get.

No more crisps or choccy, which like most that have posted on here have said they didn’t bother with before quit but love now I’m the same so out they go, when Iv eaten the last lot of course.

Also exercise which I tend to shy away from is a must as since quit Cholesterol has gone up and now so has my BP so not finding this quitting is that healthy LOL.

So I hope you are happy now that you are making us all diet, I can honestly say I have never HAD to diet in my life before but here goes, will keep you posted.

Well done on all your quits.

I don't know because I don't weigh myself... the scale is the instrument of the devil! bestsmileys.com/evil/2.gif

I think I have put a bit on but my clothes still fit (which is how I usually gauge my weight) and I'm sure any extra pounds will come back off when I stop comfort eating.

Meanwhile I'm trying to snack on healthy foods... fruit, hummus & rice cakes, yoghurt etc

Hey all, I am only in my first week, but wanted to share that on my first quit (which lasted nearly 18 months) I LOST 3 stones, I did it by spending the money joining a gym. Also I think because I cut down on my drinking to avoid smoking I lost weight that way. The second quit, lasted 14 months, and I put on 30 lbs - but because I was pregnant! Personally I think quitting smoking is more important than worrying about weight, and I know I would rather be fat than stinky and unable to breathe!

That's OK then because Jam has already threatended to slap me ;)

Yep I've put on weight and quite alot of it. Does it get me down - hell yeah sometimes I get proper depressed over it all. But I've come to terms with the fact that for most weight gain is all part of the quitting process. My problem is that I do just eat more, I can tast my food and I love food. But I have reigned my eating habits in now, well tryng to :o

Someone (can't remember who) has a great quote in their sig 'fat I can fix. cancer I can't' or words to that effect. I remember this when I'm feeling down about my lardie bum and my other new wobbly bits.

(oh there is one good thing - my boobs are bigger :D)

My boobs never get bigger :( Even when I was pregnant they stayed determinedly A/B cup!!

The rest of me will get bigger quite happily, it is so unfair! The way I have been snacking this last week my bum may need its own postcode soon!

Luv it - bum have its own postcode - I think mine has already got one - if someone pinned a tail on mine - it could be mistaken for something else :D that did make me laugh - thanks for that.

The thing is though is when I start losing my weight it will go off my boobs first. There a nice D cup now and I don't need chicken fillets at the moment :D

and clench 2, 3, 4.... :p

Seriously my bum just is growing - I just had my shower and went to put on my jeans and had to fight them on - after only one week!!!

What is weird is I keep eating even though I know I should not, and am not even hungry - time to get strict with myself!

I personally think it is all to do with addictive personalities. We we addicted to smoking, and then either get addicted to snacking or exercising after!!!!

Will not eat my own bodyweight everyday!!!

Yeah, i've been telling myself that everyday for 2 weeks, in fact i've just been and dug out my recipe for Victoria sponge. I went on a cake making course earlier this year, which unfortunately means I now make a mean sponge and swiss roll :D

I quit smoking in August 2009 and have put on 2 stone.

But I now go running. I am so much fitter than I was as a smoker.

I run about 2 mles a day, and although I have yet to lose any weight, that is more likely the Citalopram that is causing that.

nsd_user663_6991 profile image
nsd_user663_6991

It's probably a stone for me but I think I underate when I smoked so was probably underweight. Most people think I look normal but I would like to get back to my pre-baby smoker weight of 8.5/9st. Even though I carry a bit more weight I'm a lot fitter! The ridiculous thing is that I started smoking to control my weight when I was younger (and more vain) and now it doesnt seem quite as important!! Hopefully I've grown up and wised up. Amanda

I have just seen this post and wanted to say to you please dont feel bad hunni, you have come a long way with stopping that nasty smoking habit and you dont want to go back to that so please stay strong. As for the extra weight, maybe there is something else out there that can help you when you feel the urge instead of eating, but please hunni dont go feeling bad about it. Take care and if you want to private mail me please do xx

If you go back to smoking you won't suddenly lose all that wieght... and you'll feel, not only frumpy, but also out of breath and unable to excersise... which will make it even more difficult for you to lose all that weight.

With not smoking at least you only got one problem to worry about, if you start smoking it'll be two!

I know how much weight issues can get people down, I'm extremely critical of myself when it comes to my body, to the point where I won't look in the mirror if I don't like what I see.

Please be strong.

Sending you lots of love x

Tinks. I knew a lady who was always well dressed, slim, attractive and fun to be round. She was a smoker. She started to suffer from pain in her upper left leg, which was eventually diagnosed as a massive blood clot.

She went in for surgery, but the damage to the vessels and muscles was so bad the leg had to amputated. This was all down to smoking.

How much more uncomfortable would you feel if this happened to you? How much more would you feel people staring and whispering about you? Weight can be lost, limbs can't be grown back.

Lynne, the lady I'm talking about, died a few years after the amputation aged 45 as the clots had already started to move around her body, eventually reaching her brain and triggering multiple strokes.

DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!

If you are ever feeling down about your weight while you are quitting just say to yourself: "still got all my bits, lungs are working better, heart is working better, blood working as it should, risk of anything bad happening seriously reduced, money saved, life expectancy longer and I'm no longer a slave".

As others have said on this thread, keep up with the quit, don't give yourself another problem. It will not help you. Nicotine is NOT a miracle weight loss device.

Hey you!!

I used to feel the same hun.. i was one of those lucky people that always got my figure back after having a baby.... and i never went over 9 stone fully pregnant!!

I gave up smoking back in March and in a matter of weeks all my clothes were too small through my weight gain!!

I just want to emphasize what SLB has said.... starting up smoking again will not make you lose that weight believe me i know, i started back up again for numerous reasons, one of which was i didnt want to look a "fatty" on the beach on my holiday in August!! But nothing changed when i started back up, the weight didnt automatically fall off me like i thought it would. If anything i only lost a few pound.

And now here i am again quitting for the umpteenth time.... when i could have had 9 months of quit behind me!

My motto now is , id rather be fatter and healthier than skinny and unfit.

Once my quit has been conquered completely, i know losing weight will be my next aim, it will be easier as i will be more fitter and more able to excerise!

Chin up hun, please don't let this get to you, you have done so well, don't throw all that hard away just for the sake of putting on a bit of weight.

((hugs))

Hey Tinks,

Glad you are feeling better. Don't think you were being selfish though. Let it all out, get the support from people on here (who are all going through the same as you), work your way through it and move on to the next part of your smoke free life.

Take a deep breath and feel how wonderful it is to feel better without the smokes.

Keep up with your smoke free life and keep smiling x

I don't think you were being silly either, stuff like gaining weight gets most people down (especially women) and it's normal to try to find a quick fix for it. Glad you found the comments here helpful, we're all bound to feel down about something or other and here is just the place to voice those problems :)

You have got it in one!!! I am eating sweets, choccy biccys, any carbs with added sugar and have put on 10 lbs in 5 weeks:eek:

I had lost weight prior to stopping in the knowledge that I would put some on, however it too me 5 months to lose a stone, I didnt expect to put it on as quickly.

But I believe its all an oral fix, and I have already sussed that I have an addictive personality, thumb sucking, nail biting and smoking. I have noticed I am drinking more when I am out, its the hand mouth movement thingy :p

I was out last night and managed to go out and stand with the smokers no problem (it was very hot in the venue and I am a lady of a certain age).
