So sad.....

Smokers don't like scare tactics but for those who are quitting already it is good to get the occasional reminder of the tremendous benefits of quitting...... HEALTH!

I got a temporary job at a nursing home..... I was working with this sweet little lady.... one day she is participating in therapy, huffin and puffin of course.... then a few days later she can barely move and breathe.... held her hand and the next day she died. Lung cancer due to smoking.... she dragged herself outside for a smoke day before she died even though she could hardly breathe.

Just a week or so later this pain in the butt guy.... in his late 50s.... overweight and smoker. Died in his sleep.... emphysema, totally unexpected. I liked him a lot. That was my third week on the job.

Sweet old man with lung cancer, brain tumor, and cancer on right side of his face.... his face is all swollen up from the tumor and he's on morphine cause the pain is so bad. He is convinced he will beat this.... last week Friday he sat in his chair all day on oxygen, couldn't even talk or eat. I was upset to find him sleeping when I went home as I was convinced he was going to pass away this weekend.... To my surprise he was still there on Monday.... he's feeling better this week and spends most of his day outside smoking.

Every day I go home and I have to pass through the group of smokers to get to my car. I am so thankful I am free of this addiction. The reality of this is truly awful. Quitting smoking is hard but dealing with the consequences is much harder.

Good post, Bella!

It's the daily struggles in our lives that paint a realistic view of life....and how some people struggle with their addiction. When one gets to the end of their days it would be difficult to insist that they stop smoking...a pleasure to them, as it was a pleasure to us all.

Nevertheless, an informative and hard hitting set of examples of what life can be if we choose to continue poisoning ourselves on a daily basis.

Thanks for posting....I feel that this should be bumped back up to the top of the list in case any newbies or near newbies miss your post.

Keep on keepin' on,

Cav

As horrible as it is to hear about these kind of things it really opens my eyes as to WHY I need to quit.

I don't want to get to the same age as these people and have my daughter visiting me in a nursing home because of my smoking..

This has made me even more determined to quit..Thank you

I'm so glad to have this opportunity to quit while still in my 20s... thanks for the motivation!

My mother in law has emphasema, she has smoked since she was a teenager. she was diagnosed last year and already she's gone downhill so quickly, she finds it hard to breathe, she barely eats, she's loosing weight so fast, she's done to 6stones 9lbs (83lbs) despite that fact that she's 5ft 6inches, due to the fact that she has no appetite, her body is using the calories to breath. she's dying before our eyes, she uses a wheelchair if she goes out, and gets breathless just walking into the kitchen. Despite all this she still smokes 40+ cigarettes a day, and will not quit.

As awful as it sounds I look at her and know that I never ever want to be like that. It might be too late for her, but it's not too late for me.

Just wanted to add

Hi Guys

A few months ago i helped out a lady who runs the local hardware store by caring for her husband while she went out. He smoked constantly, could hardly breathe, move or do much else but the amount of ciggies he smoked in the few hours at a time i looked after him was sickening. He was too late in his illness for anything to have been much use in helping him but he died in May this year a very horrible painful death and he was only 77 i think.

I used to be a Carer and then started training to be a nurse, gave up cos of family probs but all the same the people you see with so many nasty side effects and after years of puff, puff, puffing is dreadful.

We have all done the right thing, by saying N.O.P.E now to these god damn things and when we get that bliming urge come back and read Bella's post because heopfully that will be enough to make you stop in your tracks and know you have done the right thing. I for one want this to work, i like being a non smoker, i smell fresher, im starting to feel healthier even though i only stopped yesterday morning and overall im a better person and YES today i saw so many people with those things in there mouth and they SMELT AWFULL, i also noticed people who smoked too even if they did not have one in there mouths, now thats weird!

LOL
