I would have it checked out by a doc,it may be nothing but better safe than sorry.
Hi angel
it could be indigestion try something like peppermints or fizzy drinks to make you burp. or if you are really worried ring nhs direct ..hope you are feeling better.
June.
Fallen, I woke up with a tight chest this am and it's been there on and off allday. We're about the same place aren't we - so it's probably all normal. They don't tell you all this when they tell you it's all over bar the shouting after 3 days!!!
Hope it's feeling better
The tightness seems better today. I'm curious if it is a 'stopping thing' or a 'stress thing.'
Hi Angel if it is realy worrying you then best advice is see doc or ring and speak to them.
Many people suffer with anxiety and panic when they quit which can manifest as tightness and even chest pain, this will pass but is horrid when you are going through it, but as I said ask a proffessional and that will put your mind at rest and when that happens you will be suprised at how quickly it will ease of.
Hope you feel better soon.
^thank you Jam, your a star ^
I will talk to the GP. I'm probably more worried than normal because i am going under a general in a few days and that freeks me out ALOT plus i've been through it since quitting.
HHas anyone had this tightness of the chest and hoow long did it last? really scares me.
1) Your lungs are repairing themselves and the cilia (little hairs inside your lungs) are growing back also depending on how long you have quit the tar inside your lungs is beginning to break down and get cleaned out. This makes your chest feel itchy and stressed making it 'feel' like you are not breathing properly. You may actually wake up some mornings with a tobacco taste in your mouth, this is the tar moving.
2) Some smokers are in actual fact addicted to deep breathing aside from nicotine. Inhaling smoke is basically a form of deep breathing like yoga. When we quit we tend to not do deep breathing anymore like we were previously as a smoker. Your chest finds this change strange and the muscles in your chest spasm giving you a 'tight' feeling. You may find deep breathing exercises done each day will alleviate the symptoms.
3) Stress. Pure and simple if your anxious or stressed which is exacerbated by your quit then your chest muscles can get tense which makes you feel like you cant breath. You are going to need to try some relaxation techniques.
The symptoms come and go but usually should be gone in a few weeks. Though personally I found that they can come back occasionally, albeit briefly.
Got this from a web site for quitting, decided not to download all as we can catch symptoms LOL
Crikey.... that is so true, i undersgtand all of the above but i didn't realise that the cilia hairs are actually GROWING BACK! how strange is that? i mean where did they go what happened to them lol! what the smoke frazzled them off? and what TAR is removing itself? but why now? why after a week or so and not before?
The tightness was so bad that i actually believed i could not swallow. I was out having a sunday roast yesterday & every time i went to swallow the food my throat and chest said 'no you are about to choke' i'd panic aand then my chest would become tight and i'd start to worry. It's doing my head in, since stopping smoking i can't eat and i can't breath.
I do love a bit of A&P. and no not about to re spark.
I think as well there is a bit of anxiety and panic in there as well, bet you have the trembly feeling and heart racing added together wither the tight chest and the feeling you cant swallow gives you a classic panic syndrom/attack so you should prob see doc any and he wii definately put your mind at rest, soooo common after quit.
