Good one

Have often fallen back into smoking when drinking and always feared going for a beer, this time (with a friend's birthday and beers) quit anyway, had previously destroyed quits with this person it was different this time though. Even as he lovingly *caressed* his cigarette in full view of me through the picture window, I just thought *d*ck* and smiled.

All today and probably for some time I've been thinking about my quits and having to acknowledge I didn't really want to stop something else was motivating me and so I was bound to fail. I've subconciously known that was why I failed. For me using NRT just kept me closer to smoking. Thinking that I couldn't do it without "help" even at the start of this quit thought the same and in some ways made matters worse for me by having very low amounts of nicotine gum and extending the ruddy withdrawal period. All people are different though, for me NRT has been a mare.

As to the smoking and drinking link I have no doubts, given the culture of drink in this society, that if I continued smoking I would likely have become an alcohol too. Additionally, based on the new theory of alcoholism (not just daily dependency but occasional binge drinking to excess - new theory) I would probably be placed in that category. Last night I even interspersed drinks with water (probably cause dehydrated from exercise) but nevertheless a change in behaviour that I welcome. Re-reading this it comes off like a stream of consciousness thing but will be good to look back on as my quit goes forward into being a non-smoker.

Lastly, the point about drink enhancing the calming effects of cigarettes, this may be perfectly valid, I do think I find alcohol far less enjoyable now for me, not necessarily a bad thing and long may it continue.

I'm finding that although i still like to get smashed occasionally for fun with close mates, there's a lot of unnecessary drinking that I'm cutting out. and im really happy about that.

i think binge drinking is a big problem in England. i recently lived with some Italian girls who were nothing short of horrified by how much me and my English pals could put away in a week. its just not the culture over there.

One of the scariest facts that I learned recently about drinking is that it is physiologically impossible for your body to build new muscle when you go to bed drunk. as it inhibits the protein synthesis production cycle that happens when you sleep.

so all those years i went to the gym to lift weights, then went out for a night drinking were completely pointless.

to be fair i never felt like i was getting much bigger - lol

Now that is interesting to know - might need to lay off the drinkies for a while, not that I want to be a body builder, had 2 glasses of wine last night -why I had the second I'll never understand - so anything I did in the gym earlier is prob for naught!

Yeah,B I'm sure that Brits in general drink way too excess. I was horrified to find two glasses of wine is considered binge drinking( God knows what they would call it if they could see a few of my past nights out-even those pretty sedate ones....)

Me and some friends (none of whom particularly are very heavy drinkers in our opinions ) were looking at a "How Hazardous is your drinking?"questionnaire from someones doctor. We were all in the "Hazard " category , inc. someones mum who only goes out once a week and has 3 pints (Binge drinking Mum)!

I've been googling the drinking/smoking thing and it's really interesting. For me too MAH , drinking is not so enjoyable without the other, and past a certain few, brings on the "I MUST HAVE A FAG!"- But part of the reason i gave up was that i no longer really enjoyed smoking- I only enjoy them a lot with alcohol, Its like the alcohol makes the cigarettes better! I could easily smoke 40 just while drinking.

Google "Drinking makes smoking better" and a whole load of stuff comes up- fascinating.

Sorry, that probably sounded purely random and mad.

I meant to post these links about the pleasure link of alcohol and nicotine together under that....

Most of which seem to suggest my alcoholism:rolleyes:

I am warmly congratulating myself however on managing to finally post a link at all!

I am sure you are not alone there......I for one enjoy a drink or 2 or 3 or 4 or.......however many!! Interesting links thanks for that.....does this mean my alcohol intake is going to subside??....I will have no vices left, how boring...Cheers Kez.

ROFL Kez , unfortunately it does seem as though the alcohol intake must subside- Believe me, I have tried to find ways to keep it where it was! I can't get drunk and haven't been so for at least a few months. If you find a way to do it- let me know.:D

Had a look at the links .........

And so true, alcohol is a bit of a chore now actually though the reminder that 2 glasses of wine is binge drinking was timely as has two glasses last night - just don't seem to be getting the buzz with alcohol at the moment. Alcohol was also a bit of a relief, it allowed *me* to be less reserved, for wont of a word now it just doesn't seem to work.

I know it lowers my inhibitions and it is also the time when having a puff seems most likely. Am away at a festival this weekend and it has crossed my mind that it could bee dangerous - Chrissie did it tho, so can I.

My friends aren't smokers but that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of peeps to bum a smoke off!

Oh yes, can be dangerous lol. I actually started again before going to Glastonbury because I knew I'd smoke and drink .. If it's any consolation MAH cigs were 7.50 a packet  and i really resented paying it, but still did- and come the last day i couldn't wait to give up again...

It is indeed, can't ruddy wait, thinking of doing the Barcelona one next summer, anything for some summer sun.

Just realised I keep *forgetting* that 2 glasses of wine is binge drinking, s'pose just want to forget how much I can drink - or at least could in the past.

£7.50 - what a pi55 take!

No cigs for me this weekend - couldn't face quitting all over again. Am toying with the idea of getting a white t shirt out and writing on it "kick me if you see me smoking" imagine some peeps might just do it even if I'm not. Don't know if writing something on my wrist might be an idea, don't really think I'll cave but better safe than sorry I s'pose. Nor do I wish to build this up in my head as some big deal - went home shortly after giving up and believe me when I say that was a baptism of fire on the smokes front - always plenty around and plenty being smoked.

Not what you're looking for?
