Hello all,

Wow, this is strange. As soon as I started typing this my heart started beating that little bit faster, and I feel nervous... excited... scared... pfft! Shocker..

Anyway... today is the day, ball ready to roll. I plan to smoke my last cig today at 4pm. I've been thinking about each cig i've had for the past few days, and each one makes me realise even more how much I hate it! Going cold turkey, and ready to grab it by the balls!

I've been smoking now for a little over 11 years. I've had a few attempts, and failed each. This time, I'm using you as a little extra support... (thank you). Reading success stories, and hearing of people in the same boat as me helps alot - makes you feel like you're not alone in all this.

What else to say... hmm.. may the force be with me??! And bring on the hell of the next 7 days!!!

Welcome to the forums, respect is due to you for this very important day and indeed your decision to quit.

Keep away from the darkside, darth vader is not your father, and yoda ? That guy had a major cold turkey going on, he sat himself away on Dagobah, no ship to get him to the 24 hour starport, and he's been there for 100 years chewing on his gimmer stick fighting those cravings for deathsticks one by one.

mmmmm smoke i will not mehhehehehe

______________

The very best of luck to you, please, please do keep us informed how your going and use the forum like a diary, it helps in weeks to come to see how far you've come.

May the force be with you :)

:) Thank you for the replies!

Margareth - thank you for your kind words. I think the fear is gonna be inevitable, but I reckon I'm ready for it... I can but try eh?

Jase - ha! oh dear, it appears I've disturbed the star wars fan in you! I'll avoid the dark side and those deathsticks and hang with a Wookie instead. They smell better! :p

Will keep people updated... Thank you again!

Hi welcome. Dont see your quit as something bad to go through, look forward and be positive. If you read some of the literature in the signatures you will get lots of help about the addiction to nicotine.

Good luck.

Ooops ............... don't beat yourself up too much - many many people including myself have to have more than one try at this ! It is NOT easy and anybody who doesn't understand that hasn't been there !! Are you able to see why you " fell off " ....... some trigger of some sort ? The most important thing I learned from here is you have never failed until you stop trying ! Hope you can pick yourself up and consider having another go ........ best of luck - Peta x

Yeah i wanna try again. and i will. at some point.

The trigger for my failing to quit more than likely came from some financial problems which have been on going for over a year now and there doesnt appear to be an end. I got a bill waiting for me at home, and bang, the quit was over... just general stress i'm sure everyone goes through... its just some people manage to cope without the fags. Perhaps i should take up heavy drinking as my own replacement therapy... hmm... I'm joking... i'm already a heavy drinker... joking again...

thanks for the encouragement. i'll set another date. one where i think i got a better chance of beating it. Don't worry, you aint lost me completely to the thing we hate to love and allow to hack away at our forever shortening lifeline.

I know its a hard thing to happen, as marg says, don't beat yourself up on it.

This bill thing that set you off though, yeah its a stress when they unexpected ones arrive and you wonder how the hell your gonna meet the bill, but i'm wondering one thing only there.. if that hadn't arrived in, would something else have set you back smoking anyway?

Reason i say this is because this is now my 4th quit attempt, and my 3rd try i lasted 4 days, and by the 4th day i was looking for just about any reason i could use to justify having a smoke again, and i easily found one.

But back to the bill.. and indeed finance in general, will your finances be helped by the money you save from not smoking? I spent the 3 months before i quit worrying about money and bills.. keeping a house, car and family going can be stressful like that, but you know? the extra saved money from not smoking really will help there. I've already seen a difference.. hope you get to see it too.

Try again though, yes when your ready of course, but don't put it off too long.

Yeah i wanna try again. and i will. at some point.

I don't pop in very often these days but your post caught my eye.

I apologise in advance if I appear a little too friendly for such a brief introduction.

I wrote the following for someone else a while ago....

The primary objective in any successful quit is losing the desire to smoke.

There are a few active threads at the moment lamenting smells, butts and the like and I noticed one where the quitter was self-limiting to 2 fags a day.

I know a few of us on here sound like stuck records but once you understand the mechanics of why you smoke and what causes us to light up the next one then it’s then straightforward to just abstain.

I don’t know how successful my quit would have been if I had to avoid fag smoke or had to avoid looking at fag-ends or even worse, I wanted to smoke..!!!

It might sound heartless but if you’re quitting or quit and you seriously fancy a smoke you’re on very shaky ground.

Read, learn, re-read, trawl and read again. Someone somewhere has written it in a way that will click and you can then stand outside with the smokers happily chatting and having no wish to smoke. If Allen Carr doesn’t work try Neil Casey then Chris Holmes then Joel Spitzer etc etc someone will have put it in words or ways that instantly focus your will.

The important bit is at the bottom. Even though you've tried briefly and failed the most important bit is that you tried. The trick is not to battle continually over whether to smoke it's simply to achieve that frame of mind, even a moment of epiphany, where you suddenly realise that you no longer wish to smoke. Approaching quitting the fags when you don't want to smoke is so much easier than quitting them when you do..!!

Read all you can on loads of different sites but don't pay too much attention to the NHS / ASH sort of people. Don't beat yourself up about setting a quit date. With determination and perseverance something might click.

If you're anything like me you'll get to the stage where despite continually reaching for a smoke you hate every single drag of it and often can't wait to stub it out.

The solution I'm afraid is not with your GP or with drugs it's good old-fashioned education.

This forum is a fabulous source of information effectively staffed by those just a little bit further along the road than you and they have no need to make a profit, report to a board or sell you stuff.

Many of us have pretty much learnt our way off the fags and it'd be nice if you could join us.

best regards,

A
