Hi there,

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong section. I'm new... and about to give up. Can't really figure out the best way to be fair. Tried before, failed. Tried a few times, failed. Really have to do this.

Is it a good idea to set a date on which you quit so you can "prepare" yourself for it, so to speak? Or does that just mentally set you up for a huge battle because you've had to give yourself time to "prepare"... hmph! :(

Thanks in advance if someone replies to this. And sorry again if it's in the wrong place.

Hi there,

This is as good a place as any! Welcome to the forum and I am really chuffed you are thinking of quitting, thats a big step! As for how you do it, everyone is different. I would suggest getting yourself mentally in 'the zone' first though. Have a read of the links in many of the signatures and educate yourself as to why you smoke. Tales from the quit really helped me. I am sure there will be others along who will give other advice too though .

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Well like I said, I've given it a go a few times but never managed to stay stopped! I'll get myself knowledged up on the methods and the like.

I'm pretty sure the "pick a date and stick to it" way of kick starting has got as good a chance as any to work for me. Though very amusing, "pick a day which is less stressful" is the usual message... ah... chance would be a fine thing!

Hi and welcome,

i would suggest picking a day and hour and sticking to it, there is something to be said for standing there smoking what you know will be your last fag.

as already mentioned read, read, read, it really does help, also post as often as you feel, rant, rave, moan whatever we have all heard it before and most of us have gone through it.

we are all here to support and help (tho i'm going on hols tomorrow!) when you are ready, and also lots of us have failed a few time before, just make sure this is your last time.

I can only speak from my own experience really as different things work for different people.

As i intended to use patches personally, i figured, i'll buy them in ready but with no set date in mind as such.

Then on a saturday night on a night were i was going to watch a film and drink some wine, i decided at about 6pm that i would quit that night as i'd checked my packet of smokes, there was not many left in there, so figured... NO.. the whole routine i was stuck in of running to the shop for a restock and every single day being the same would stop that night.. and so i decided i would not go to the shop, and i made my remaining ones last.. til 10pm, mid way through the film and 2 glasses of wine sunk.. that was it. So away went my last one.. left a 1/3rd on it, and stubbed it. Done.

Went to bed around midnight(ish) and woke up to my plan.. put a patch on and here i am 30 days later.. still going.

For me i felt setting a date would not be my style, it had to be an on the spot decision on the day/night it was to happen.. and thats how it went for me.

Hi needacuppa :D

Well done deciding to quit I think just do what feels right to you either set a date or just stopping it doesn't really matter at all and neither does whatever way you decide to go CT NRT whatever

All that matters is that you quit when you're ready OK

Below is my standard welcome and advice post which I try and send to all new members

Welcome to the forum and well done on the decision to quit possibly one of the most important you will ever make and you will be losing nothing but you will regain control of your life and that has to be good

You will find all the help and support you need on here as we all help each other just like a family we are here for you every step of the way cheering the good days and sympathiseing with the bad but the good far outweigh the bad

Read the posts on here you will find a lot of tips and advice and in the signatures of a lot you will find links to other sites just click on them Here are 2 I find very good to start you off whyquit.com and woofmang.com Read, read and then read some more as the more you read and learn about why you smoked and about your addiction the easier your quit will be

Post often to let us know how you're doing, to rant, rave have a moan whatever you like pretty much anything goes on here OK

Love

Thank you all for your welcomes and the advice. It's a big step eh? Giving up something which you haven't lived without for so many years. I don't even know what kind of person I am without a cig in my hand...

I'll chose the date and stick to it. Will let you know how I'm getting along... though you probably won't be able to miss my posts when the nagging rage finally hits home.. heh...

Thank you again.

You will be the person you were before you had a cig in your hand many years ago, only alot wiser.

Good luck with your quit once you begin it.

Please do! Something I found good was to post for help, then later on I would post help to others. It helped my quit process and the understanding of my addiction really well. This forum has pretty much saved my sanity. As a starter for ten have a look at this small link. It may give you a bit more of a confidence boost to start the ball rolling. woofmang.com/tales/only_on_...

hi needacuppa:D

im on my 3rd time of trying now and i can tell you now support, and will power are big factors of quitting

my girl has my back and is supporting me big time and also the support from people on this site is fantastic, i could not of got this far at the minute without me girl & people on this site, so if i was you i'd go brew a cuppa;) and get ready because your first few days will be hell...well mine were

another thing i do is try and keep my fingers busy wether its play my PS3, text, or type, just anything, and also find stuff to keep you entertained ie read a book (not my cup of tea i must admit) but try anything to keep your mind off those cigs and prevent you from doing anything to do with them because you will be so busy working with your fingers

hope this is helpful to you and good luck quitting:D

you got my full support and i bet you got everyone else's on this site as well

well done for deciding to quit:D

Not what you're looking for?
