My new quit...

So, i posted a few times on here at the start of the year as i quit around january. Lasted about 6 weeks in the end having gone cold turkey, and then started smoking again like an idiot.

In terms of my history, i'm 33 and been smoking since i was around 21/22. i smoked 20 a day during that time, starting out on roll ups and then moving on to 'real' cigs after a few years.

After numerous failed nrt quit attempts in my 20s, i managed to quit when i was 27 by going cold turkey. I stayed quit for 3 years, until the break up of the relationship i was in when i started again and was back to 20 a day within weeks. Feeling down is a major trigger for me, i suffer with depression and become self destructive during serious down periods - i get perverse enjoyment from the damage smoking is doing to me when i am in that frame of mind. I simply don't care anymore.

But anyway, you may have noticed i am posting in days 4-7. I am into day 5 of my new quit. I took a rather different approach this time. Having recently purchased an iPhone i was browsing the app store for what 'stop smoking' apps were available - quit counters etc. Stumbled upon the Max Kirsten hypnotherapy app and having seen the amount of positive reviews it got decided to give it a try. Figured if it even kept me off fags for a day it would have paid for itself anyway.

I have to say i was extremely sceptical starting out. To the point that when i started listening to the main hypnotherapy session i was actually laughing out loud to myself as it seemed so ridiculous. But 45mins later after the session was finished, i picked up the rest of my fags and binned them. Haven't smoked since, and can honestly say i have had no desire to. Smoking still pops into my mind every now and again, but i wouldn't even describe it as a 'craving'. More like just remembering something i used to do in a certain situation. I'm sleeping well, my concentration is fine, i'm not ratty or angry. Genuinely surprised at how well it has worked, tho a little worried that it won't last.

So has anyone else quit using hypnotherapy? There doesn't seem to be much mention of it on here, and i'd be interested to hear other peoples stories of how they found it.

Hypnotherapy

Hi - I had hypnotherapy last Friday morning - I am now on Day 6 of quitting !! I am not sure if it is the actual hypnotherapy or whether indeed it is at that point you make a real commitment ?? I also suffer from severe depression so understand your problems - the only thing I can say is smoking really gives me nothing at all - to me it is a habit and not a very nice one - ok we are conditioned to believe it relaxes us but in fact nicotine is actually quite stressful - I don't know if I will manage this - I am very much taking the one day at a time approach and also reminding myself that I really do NOT want to go through these ghastly feelings again - still light headed and fatigued - but this is normal apparently - best of luck to you - my therapist gave me a cd to listen to as well - so have uploaded to my ipod - haven't used it yet but might later today - stay in touch

Cool, good to hear from someone else taking a similar approach.

Interested to hear whether the cd makes a difference for you.

The course i'm using has a 45 minute main session that you listen to once a week, and then a 20min 'booster' session that you listen to the other 6 days of the week. From what i've read most people need a few sessions to really 'get it' with hypnotherapy - so i think having a recording you can listen to could really make a difference. It's certainly a lot cheaper than going to see someone in person!! :)

Make sure you are drinking plenty of fruit juices in these early stages. The light headedness and fatigue you are feeling is probably due to your blood sugar level being all over the place because of nicotine withdrawel. I find drinking loads of cranberry juice really helps me.

It would be slightly ironic if i gave up smoking and then died of a cranberry overdose!!....:D

I have a self-destructive personality aswel and have had 2 previous nervous breakdowns.

i suffered badly after a realationshiip i had aswell.

one thing i liked about that girl and i'll never forget is the day she called me a loser.

ha everytime i think of picking up a cigi, can of beer or a cake i think of those words!

we are here on this earth now, so why be one of those losers that sits in the park all day drinking cider.

thats the easy way out...

when i get stressed i run like the wind until i am on my back, that helps a lot.

one day i'll see my ex again, and i'll tell her to look at me now huny!

i am a winner!

love

hi margareth, i remember you from here back in january. Good to see your quit is still going strong.

I'm just about to head into week 2, and still feeling good. Though my skin has gone back to being like that of a teenager - and by that i mean covered in spots, rather than young looking.

Yes strange that - I am on Day 8 today and I have developed three " quit zits " !!! Must be the poison finding its way out !! Stick with it - I nearly " fell " yesterday evening - but I don't want to go through these past 7 days again !! Hey - the red arrows have just gone over my home - what a sight.
