Cried last night spontaneously for no reason, and no, it wasnt my hormones. Stopped with the inhaltor now so maybe it was that but fed up of being debilitated every evening.

This is week 5 now. If I still feel like this at the end of the weekend, Im thinking of giving in.

I nearly did last night and think I nearly might tonight.

Joe, i know it is hard hun, and weirdly im finding it more difficult now then what i did first week.

Joe you quit the same day as me and look,we are on 5 weeks tomorrow, if you quit tonight or by the end of the week you are going to be feeling a lot worst than what you are now.

Please hang in there hun, re read everything you did at the beginining, that has helped me, but what i am doing at the moment is having an early night as that seems to be the only way to get through.

Things will get better hun, we have to believe that, how else have others got through it, things have to improve and soon.

If you give in to the nico demon then the pent house is going to be lonely without you, so you better hang in there Joe.

Keep thinking of all the reasons you quit in the first place, and all the reasons now why you dont want to go back to fags. I bet if you tried to think of all the reasons to go back to fags you wont have much of a list.

Please please please hang in there, you are stronger than the nico demon, you have proved that already.

Thinking of you hun, and hope tonight is an easier night for you.

Hey Joanne, don't be giving in, I totally agree with Denise in how it seems worse in some way than at the start, I've been really fidgety for a couple of weeks and can't stop thinking about all the good fags

What do you mean by debilitated at night though? Do you really feel like returning to being a full time smoker would make you feel better?

I know my only options are to not smoke at all or to smoke 20+ a day and risk the effects that smoking will surely bring some day

nsd_user663_3849

Joanne - don't you dare give in to that nico-demon. Tell him to pi$$ off and leave you alone!

You have done SO well to get this far - stick it out and it will get easier again. I do know how you feel about being tearful though. I burst into tears this morning when my car wouldn't start. The last time I cried was about 6 months ago when I watched a sad film. I just don't do crying.

This morning I went back inside and rang work to say I'd be late and I swear if there had been a packet of fags in the kitchen I'd have smoked one. (or maybe I wouldn't).

I feel great now though - I am so pleased I haven't smoked, I actually like myself a lot more than I used to!

I feel debilitated in the evening because I CANT FUNCTION. I just sit watching TV and think about cigs. I cant get on with jobs and stuff.

Bibleblack- my grandad was 88 2 weeks ago and he was a publican, he's smoked and drank all his life!! OK he has had a stroke but he's still fagging it now!

I don't want to smoke and Jerry-Lee, Denise and other Monkey Bar Stewards have been a great source of support but ironically,

I WANT MY LIFE BACK!

I feel like it's crippling me now and I don't know what to do anymore.

When does it go, this horrible feeling? I'm tired of it now.

Hello Jo,

If you have just packed in with the inhalator, it sounds like you are having nicotine withdrawel. You have got over the worst bit already (psychological addiction), so you only have to get over the next 3 days before the worst is really over.

Please stick with it, you have done BRILLIANTLY to get to week 5. It is an amazing achievement and you should not want to throw all that effort away.

Take care x

Joe if you give in then the ciggys will have you back in their control, do you really want to go back to being a slave? having you days mapped out for you when you will be able to fit your ciggys in?

I really dont want to go back there again Joe and if it means feeling like shit for a while then so be it. Please dont choose to be a slave Joe.

Thinking of you hun

Jo - I know what you mean about wanting your life back. It is because smoking has been a main part of your life for a long time. It feels strange to be without it and it feels as though nothing is quite right. But you have to remember that it will take time to retrain your brain. The longer you stick it out and the more situations you put yourself in - the more confident you will feel about kicking this.

If you have just got rid of the inhalator then you need to take it a day at a time again.

I know that nico-demon is screaming at you that it's ok to smoke all your life because your 88 year old grandpa is still alive BUT we can all pull someone like that out the bag when we need to justify our reasons for smoking. I have a 90 year old aunt who has smoked her 10 silk cut a day for most of her life!

BUT I also know of MANY more people who have died prematurely due to smoking and I know they wished they could have been in your position where you still have TIME to change your habits.

Please try to be stronger than the nico-demon - you know you can do it!

nsd_user663_3817 profile image
nsd_user663_3817

Thanks Jerry-Lee. I feel a bit emotional again now. It may be the inhalator so I need to wait until weekend. I couldn't do it without this forum. We do try and justify it don't we? It's because it's so hard.

I hope you are doing OK.

Jo .... You PROMISE us all you'll go another SEVEN days , not just 2 .. and if you don't feel better by then, by all means, go and smoke yourself to death.

Not meant to sound as harsh as that does ... but, ... you've done 5 weeks - don't throw that away through feeling crap - for ***'s sake, EVERYONE on this site has felt crap or is feeling crap right now ..

Friend of a friend - I never met the guy, but I know a dozen blokes who knew him well - he was slim, athletic, never ever smoked, hardly ever drank, worked out most days .... his name was Larry - EVERYONE called him Larry the Lamb - because he looked so young ... he dropped dead with a heart attack on a tennis court half way through a game ... aged 40. 3 years ago.

I'm 46. I've smoked way too much,. I drink too much, I don't exercise. Where's the justice in that - me vs Larry?

There isn't ... SO .. don't use your grandad as justification for YOU smoking.

It don't work like that.

4 years ago, if I could have swapped my body for Larry's (yeah OK, that can't happen, but IF IT COULD .. I'd have said yes, all day long {as long as his todger was my size or bigger, obviously ;)}

Don't grade your life by your grandad - as J-L said, we can all drag someone out of that hat like that.

Take Care. DON'T SMOKE!

DBSFS!!

Cheers,

Jim

Thats a great post BB.

Joanne, listen to these people. Some of them have been there, others are going through it right now and are still taking the time to try and help you through it.

It is that important!

None of the symptoms are going to kill you, but smoking just might.

My ex's grandma lived to 98 having smoked like a chimney most her life - so I shall go off and have a fag despite the fact my father died in his mid 60's, shall I? Of course not.

For everyone you know who lived a long life smoking... I bet there are at least 2 that didn't. Probably a lot more than 2.

When you find you can't do anything else, read lots. Get online and read everything you can find. It does help, I promise... knowledge is power!

Best wishes Joanne, you CAN do this. And it does get easier. In a couple of weeks you will look at this thread and wonder what on earth was going on! I promise.

nsd_user663_3817 profile image
nsd_user663_3817

Well I will promise 7 more days and then that's it I think. If it's STILL unbearable in the evenings, I will concede. That's just 7 days, no more. So that's next Wednesday night. Not another day more than that.

You will have to let me go after that if I want too and just wish me all the best.

dangermousette profile image
dangermousette

Ok - that sounds like a deal. But only 1 other thing........ you have to promise to sign in here at least once a day in the next 7 days...... shake on it?!!

nsd_user663_3816 profile image
nsd_user663_3816

ok Joe

Maybe its me but it almost feels like you are looking forward to the end of the 7 days so you can have a ciggy :(

But the fact that you are still posting is a good sign that you want to keep fighting it.

Hope this week turns out to be a good week Joe, im going to miss my quit buddy if she decides to give in :(

If you think it is important but - what is the point of that? Are you in cahoots with BibleBlack? Do you both work undercover for the NHS?

nsd_user663_3633

If you think it is important but - what is the point of that? Are you in cahoots with BibleBlack? Do you both work undercover for the NHS?

Personally I think the NHS are rubbish, and anyone who quits using only NHS advice is very lucky indeed.

nsd_user663_3849 profile image
nsd_user663_3849

And in those seven days you go and do lots of reading. Make sure you understand your addiction then work out a strategy to cope with the evenings. I would seriously think about going to bed early - I do and feel better for it.

Maybe take some exercise? Go out for a walk, go swimming or do your own workout in your house.

If it's keeping your hands busy how about knitting? I'm not joking, it's really rewarding!

The old scout motto - be prepared is the key to dealing with the times you know are going to be tricky. 'Fail to prepare - prepare to fail'!

You won't fail though - it's not worth chucking it in now.

If you can't bear the thought of never smoking again - promise yourself one on your 90th birthday - I'm going to!

Have you ever read Quitters Inc by Stephen King??

It reminds me of this forum.

Hey Jo, just thought I'd have another pop at you:p

I understand the whole inability to function thing, I had that on previous attempts, but, imagine your inability to function being down to the fact that you couldn't walk anywhere because you'd just had your foot removed due to your bad circulation or you had to get someone to carry your oxegen because you couldn't breath without it or you didn't really want to leave the house until your hair grows back (that's if the chemo was succesful) I could go on. I hope this makes you really think about how you feel now and renews your resolve to quit.

It may seem like these things won't happen to you ( like the old man we all see now and again enjoying his smoke) but the reality is it's more likely it will happen.

Goodnight all;)

The way we experience the quit varies from person to person, for example I have never had the bursting with energy feeling that many do.

I train hard and found that when I quit I needed more sleep, and was more tired. I think the stimulant of the fags is what kept me awake, a bit like a caffeine rush.

After 3-4 months though I found a massive increase in recovery rate and now at 6 months+ I find that my stamina is improving rapidly too.

It can take some time to get used to the way things are but as a non smoker they will be much better in the long run. Think of it this way that you are trading the comfort from a short portion of your life to protect the larger portion still to come.

Cheers

Hey Joanne, are you doing anything in the evenings? I've started doing some excercise, nothing too strenuous, just sit ups, press ups and walking. I've also found a reasonable snack, dry Special K - better than crisps or sweets! If it's dry I go for walks for a couple of miles. I know if I just sat thinking about fags I would be smoking again by now.

It is doin my head in the feeling that I want a fag when I know I don't and also thinking of forthcoming events where I feel it will be a real problem not smoking but as I come across situations it isn't that hard to say 'no'.

Please think back to when you were smoking, I know that I did not enjoy fags at all, although my brain is now trying to convince me that I did. I certainly prefer being a non smoker wanting the odd fag than a smoker depressed with being in the trap of having to poison myself every hour and that is how I came to view myself.

Anyway - blah blah blah over, I have the feeling you have already made your decision but I really hope I'm wrong.

Hey Jo. You are really having a tough time of it aren't you? I know exactly what you're going through. I have stopped before (many a time) and the last time I quit I started again 3 weeks later because I allowed that thought that I missed it and enjoyed it back into my head. Of course as soon as I had that first puff, I realised that was not the case. But, guess what, too late. I continued to smoke again for over a year after that. :(

I have just ordered a "Wii Fit". I thought it would give me some exercise, help me to lose the excess weight that is piling on right before my very eyes and in addition would keep my mind busy and be fun too!

I have easily saved the money by not smoking so far this month so thought it might be a wise investment.

If you don't fancy that, do you like reading? Getting stuck into a gripping novel helps to keep your mind well away from smoking. Or even finding something else to do on the computer like playing a daft game or something. I don't know what your interests are but there are a few suggestions which may or may not help.

You're doing really well though. The worst is over, keep that thought in your mind. :)

Hi Joe

So sorry you are having a bad time. Im sure the worse part of this week is because you are going through it again because you are stopping the nicotine I have been there on my first quit when i used patches. You sound exactly as i felt Criying fed up and thinking if this is what life is like I would be better off smoking so i did. But was not happy smoking so tryed again and again and here I am again if i had tryed to do something Im not sure what (but reading everything is good) the first quit I would be home and dry now not back here on week ten its up to you Joe Babe but your doing so well. I for one hope you stay.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

God I'm boring!!

I need a hobby or something. I am purposely trying to avoid going out drinking at the mo so my body is super healthy!!!

I might try some craft type thing or even knitting like Jerry Lee suggested!

Easier today - but what does that matter on this rollercoaster of a ride..

Will post tomorrow cos I promised DM I would every day.

Jo - I may be able to offor a diferent perspective on a quit.

I was reasonably fit BEFORE I quit and use to run at the gym every night.

I ended up quiting when I went into hospital with pneumonia.

I feel like utter crap for 2 months - couldn't do anything, wasn't working, was bored out of my mind etc etc.

Also felt like a complete fake.

I'd always rebelled and hated the feeling of conforming "The bastards have got me at last".

I didn't have the miracle of food tasting better and I felt worse for a long time. I am only just starting to get my life back on track now. I contemplating reversing so many times - and after my Christmas work night out did have one.

I think you have overblown how much pleasure you get out of it. Trust me - it's not that special, really, it will not make you feel a million dollars

ITS JUST A FAG

I am still not mentally alligned with declaring I am a non-smoker but I'm getting there.

Is any of this ringing any bells?

As for hobbys - one thing I enjoyed doing thats a bit different and not reliant on good weather is making photobooks. If you have digital pics on your computer then you can turn yourself into a desktop publisher quite easily. The results are fantastic and also reasonably priced. Much better than photo albums. All the people online who print photos also have software to produce the books. Some are better than others. I don't want to be accused of advertising but I do have a favourite if you want to PM.

Take Care & also take the opportunity to be a bitch to everyone around you - I loved getting away with murder whilst I was "giving up" :D
