May be a daft question but....

Why do people keep there "safety net" fags in the freezer?

I've got mine sat in the garage. No intention of having one mind, day 13 of quit today.

Few bad craves as it's Friday night but looking to stay strong:D

!!

I kept a "security blanket" or "safety net" for 100 days.

I have a confession to make.

There, I've said it.

I need to make a new post.

My security blanket worked for 100 smoke-free days.

I should have got rid of it some time ago.

I didn't.

:eek::confused:

Surely not!

Not heard of the freezer aspect, but the idea behind keeping a safety net is .. if you get rid of all your fags and then think you're going to crack - say it's 9pm - you think, I'll definitely crack before midnight but the shops will be shut later, so I'll nip out now and get a pack while the corner shop is still open .. by buying that packet you're on step 1 to having a smoke - it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy ... and you've now got a full packet, so if you've had one, f&*k it, may as well have another .. so .. the alternative theory is, keep some fags - if you do cave in, you'll be OK, you've got a fag or three .. and, having some and ignoring them is easier than the fear of being without any if the craves get too much in the middle of the night or whenever.

Thing is though m8, it seems as though your "security blanket" worked:)

Can't say I've ever heard of anyone keeping them in the freezer.

Mine are on the kitchen shelf next to my espresso cups.

I've still got 2 cheap lighters of a 3 pack from Lidl and a lovely engraved zippo that has even been sent back for repair under their lifetime guarantee...

aaaahh the paraphernalia... :D

If I had a packet of fags anywhere in the house then I'm sure I'd end with the "Just one wont do any harm" scenario, I'd prefer not to have a "safety net".

Truth

If I had a safety net I would have been a failed quitter today

But I didn't so I am not :D

Keep the faith

Get rid of those fags!

You have shown to yourselves that you CAN survive without them - indeed you thrive without them.

You don't need them and if you haven't got them - you can't smoke them.

Different things work for different ppl, I have a safety net and there sitting on my kitchen table... not bothered by them atall just havent bothered to do anything with them, and I feel like others have said, I would be more likely to panic buy some if had none, whereas while I have a pack I can look and think well their there if i want one later but ill keep going... and so far in 11 days even tho Ive had the obvious cravings Ive never actually thougth about taking one!

If they were in the freezer or 6 feet under i would still have got them and smoked them.

However, the act of going to the shop and buying them, therefore asking for them and paying for them would be such a public admission of failure it and knowing that if i did that i would essentially and consciously be saying I Am Smoker and not only guaranteeing the tobacco evil people (evil tobacco people?) a living, the treasury a fortune, promoting smoking to my children etc, stinking ....... sorry you know it all and i am on a nicotine lozenge, red wine fuelled rant.

The concept of a safety net to me is a stupid idea. If the temptation is there, then it's going to prey on your mind almost constantly. If you don't have great willpower then you're likely to be tearing your hair out so much more and therefore likely to crack.

You're already proving to yourself you can quit anyway, why make it any harder knowing you can fall back on that safety net? It's more a fact of wanting to fail just so you can smoke, not so much that you need to smoke. Each to their own, I guess.

I dunno, maybe a few weeks down the line I'll buy a 20 deck and cut them all into little pieces for a laugh.

It makes sense to get rid of the safety net but easier said than done. Ridiculous but some people, including myself, need the comfort to know they are there. I have a coupe of half smoked fags in a packet (from 3 weeks ago) - I smell them, soon puts me off.

I have a safety blanket, whether its a good idea or not i dont know but i do know that i needed this at the beginning.

I think on the 1-2 ocassions when the cravings have been bad i could of very easily popped up the shop and bought a packet of 10 and then i would of no doubt smoked them all, as it is i have had the occasional whiff of it which is enough to put me off.

I think if you are going to smoke you will, how else do people quit that live with smokers? they have ciggys around them all day every day. It is because they have re educated themselves on all aspects of smoking and know the damage it will do by just having the one.

I look at ciggys now and think how could i of smoked something that poisoned my body for such a long time and took all my cash in the process.

We all have the same end in sight just some of us have different ways of getting there.

Biddy, Jim, Denise, you all make very valid points. My post wasn't meant to be a stab at the idea as such; going over it now it does seem like that. I think maybe my behaviour is changing at the end of the first week without me realising it. Cheer up, Chud!

But yeah back to the safety net. I knew myself when I was planning out my quit and doing my research that I wouldn't be keeping a spare few fags lying around. I even cut up my last three cigarettes into little pieces just before I went to bed on the 19th, despite the fact that it was against my 'morals' (from a monetary aspect... waste not want not, like).

When I used to sit in front of the computer in my room at home, and chain smoke the hours away, I'd throw my cigarettes behind my wardrobe in one corner, my lighter behind my bed in the other corner, and try to forget they were there, out of sight, out of mind. But this worked for about half an hour. It's with this knowledge of myself and my lack of willpower back then that I think it's a ridiculous idea for me to have a safety net.

If it helps anyone else out (which it obviously does!) then by all means, go ahead. "We all have the same end in sight just some of us have different ways of getting there." So true, denise.

Again, apologies if the original post seemed out of line, was just giving my 2 pence.

Chuddy, dont ever think that, we are all going to have differences in opinions, everyone has valid points to make and you obviously know what will work for you - so no safety blanket has to be the way to get there.

You are doing so well, and come across as being so positive with with your quit.

Well done you :)
