Here we go again...

Hey all,

Well, I'm back after falling spectacularly from the wagon back in May. It was like a Buster Keaton stunt. Not only did I start smoking again (of course it started with just one with a pint), but I ended up doubling my intake and was puffing 20-30 a day rather than my previous 10-15.

But with the summer's festivals drawing to a close and thankfully my best smoking mates on holiday for a fortnight it seems like a good time to clamber back on and get the wagon rolling again.

On day 2 now, using patches for the first week to get me over the hump and some business meetings, and next weekend I'll cold turkey the rest.

I completely forgot how absolutely s**t this makes you feel though. You always forget just how grizzly the first few days are physically. No concentration, feel like I have the flu, aches and pains and a nose like the Hoover Dam - I just can't wait to be rid of this.

Well done for starting your quit (again)

Been where you are several times, and as you know there is no such thing as Just One.

I know what you mean about feeling like the flu, I have had a bit of that and thought it had come back as I sit here sniffing but I reckon its just Summer cold, doh.

Stick with it its worth it,

Cheers

Nic

Best of luck mate, how long did you stop smoking last time ??

Thanks guys :)

This has to be the one Suzy, to be honest I'm getting tired of everyone laughing when I say I'm quitting again hehe! But also I'm 33 now and I'm consious that I'm running out of time. It's now been 20 years since I started and that freaks me out, but more than that I want to enjoy the rest of my salad days with some fitness and energy.

I need to find an alternative to my social life though. Everytime I fail it's for exactly the same reason - over and over again - I get cabin fever after a fortnight of not going out and missing my friends, so I chance the pub and end up having just one because all of my friends chain smoke in front of me. I'm not blaming them because it is my choice after all, but it makes it so damn hard!

I need rehab. Someone really should start a 'Priory' for nicotine junkies.

Thanks man.... erm the last time was for about a month. This is the fifth attempt this year!! Usually I go for a week or two before cabin fever and empty boredom kicks in.

Yeah, sounds like you need a new hobby.

Try smoker bating. Basically you insult smokers and get them to chase after you. Fortunately you have the advantage, they will probably fun out steam before they catch you, and if they do they'll be wheezing too much to hit you.

Anyway best of luck

Nic

I wouldn't lose much sleep over it Chris, I too tumbled off thew wagon with the old 'I'll only smoke when i'm drinking' line. I eventually had to admit i was hooked when i was drinking everynight!

Smoking cessation is the only way and I sincerely hope you don't get caught again!

All the best this time :)

I like that idea Nic!

Chris, I've been off the fags for just under 5 weeks now, and i'll tell ya something - it has been easier than I thought it would be! People always think it's going to be hard, but you don't know unless you try it eh!!

Good Luck Chris - we're all behind u - day 2 is a great achievement - keep it up m8 :)

I like the smoker baiting - an alternative spin could be lighter theft. Pinch a lighter from a smoker then leg it - you get fit, have fun and get to laugh at whoever's wheezing after you!! Nice one Nic.

Thanks again guys for the support, it's nice to be back here with you all. :)

WKDFairy - I so know what you're saying. Not only had my intake gone up but also I've been out boozing a hell of a lot more, partly because its summer but also because I think one vice justifies the other if that makes sense. The great thing about quitting I suppose is that it does demand a whole lifestyle change which is a good thing.

My Dad quit twenty odd years ago and he reckons I need to stay out of the pub for 6 weeks. His advice is total abstainance from the big things that I associated with it - the main triggers. I've always been a bit of a partyer and life up to this point has been kinda hedonistic. I guess the scariest thing for me right now is that if I want to succeed I have to become a completely different person.

Oh God, I'm going to have to become a recluse! And a sensible one at that!

LOL you only think that! Just do what your Dad tells you . Stay away from the hard stuff for a wee while - i only did it for three weeks but it made all the difference. Then slowly reintroduce it until you KNOW you can have a drink without a cigarette and *gasp* enjoy it too.

I enjoy my wine better now because I can actually taste it, instead of guessing through my fuzzy tar stained smoky taste buds - bleurgh.

I felt dead smug and healthy for three weeks, all holier than thou, but having a drink is part of being me so I decided to chill out ;)

5th and last attempt you mean.....This is the time you do quit....

Like you said your running out of time...Stay off drinking for a while.

Drinking I hate to say it is a big trigger for most and bar hopping or pub hopping depending where you are at.......Good going on your decision to quit for good

this time......:D

Well Chris if it's the drinking that causes you to smoke then you should deffo give it a miss - your liver will thank you if nothing else. Easy for me to say as I sip a glass of white while my man cooks me dinner *smug* ;)

Well, I'm hoping this will be the one dubbs but to be honest, if I can get through today I'll be happy. And then tomorrow I'll just do the same.

The one thing I'm learning is that 'never again' makes the mountain feel twice as high.

hehe, yeah I think my poor body will do better all round Fairy - although I'm developing an unhealthy and almost fanatical craving for Bovril on toast as a sub.

Oh well, I will go back to the gym on Tuesday... I will go back to the gym on Tuesday.... I WILL go back to the gym on Tuesday... :o

In the 1st week I craved food that was salty, spicy or sharp.

Good move to go back to the gym on Tuesday, and not just to watch;)

Cheers

Aye, I'm the same Nic - crisps and bombay mix are my new vice, and of course my beloved Bovril on toast.

Well I was thinking about starting with a sauna and building it up gradually...

My Galaxy Caramel addiction seems to have passed Thank God, I could have eaten my body weight in those at the start. We all have to have one indulgence! I just didn't worry about it back then. And you SHOULD go to the gym....

Ahh you see, now you've set me off! I love Galaxy caramels!!! I'm off to the shop - Tuesday and the treadmill are another whole day away. :p

Nah I will go back - I absolutely love it when I'm there, I gave up for three months last year and going to the gym every day made it so much less difficult. Being fit feels gooood.

Exercise is good, health is good and chocolate is good. I'm working on the idea that non smoking will lead to a better ability to exercise and burn off the extra calories.

Hows today going?

Hey Nic. Tricky mate, I have a massive job to get out the door and my concentration is like that of a goldfish. The temptation is huge but I'm resisting so far!

How's your quit going so far?

Very good, thanks am managing to ignore smoking thoughts quite easily.

Keep resisting, its worth it!! You can do it so long as you're strong.

As you know everything you are experiencing is normal and once you're over the 1st few days it gets better.

Cheers

Cheers man and nice one! You're doing great too. Yeah I know, resistance resistance resistance - I'm using the patches again and they just keep you hanging in that half-withdrawn state if you know what I mean. Not quite chewing the table legs but not quite sane either!! Grrr.
