I started smoking at the age of 10 or 11. No wonder i found it so difficult to give up i had been smoking for nearly 30 years. OMG its scary when you think of it like that.

I was 14 when I started smoking, like a lot of others did it because others were doing it plus there was not the hype then for people to stop and the damage it could cause (well not so much).

Stay strong peeps.

I had my first cigarette at the age of 14 (July 89) - on the day Mo Johnston signed for Rangers. The two weren't related, but will forever be entwined in my memory........

(Anyone who either isn't Scottish or doesn't follow footie will have no idea what that ^^^^^ means).

Thanks Dubbbs. Yep im feeling really really positive this time. I dont even think about smoking anymore.

The one thing ive leant since starting to quit back in sept is too keep trying. If you blip and smoke for a day dont think youve been beat. Pick yourself up and start again the next day. Just keep trying because one day it will just fall into place.

I started smoking when i was fourteen because one of my mates had told me a cigarette after sex is brilliant.Took me few years to realise its better if two people are involved in the sex act though.:D

:D lol

I started when I was about 13/14... didn't inhale the first few but then soon got hang of it.

I suppose I done it cos I wanted to rebel and be 'cool'. Not cool to others but cool to myself

My friend and I would buy a bottle of Concorde with our wages and then pinch some of our Mum's fags. My mum smoked Regal Filter and her Mum smoked Superkings... so yeah, we had a great time

I bought my first pack of Regal Filters aged 14  Soon went on to L&B.

I remember telling myself at the time that I wouldn't get hooked but then 12 years later when you're still smoking and get stressed and irritable when you can't have one..... yeah, it got me too.

smoke free me

Um I think it was 14. Started more regularly doing it at 15, but think first time trying it was 14.

I do remember I that I never suffered with that "first time gagging effect" that people appear to get on the first time. Maybe thats only in TV or movies lol.

1st try... 9 or 10 years old a friend produced a ciggy he had nicked and we shared it in below a yew tree. I still remember it well, I was "scared" that my head spun but liked the taste. However, I didn't have access to ciggys my dad smoked a pipe and although I gave that a suck on one or 2 occasions I thought its well sucked.

2nd/3rd/4th etc. 19 or 20 years old most of my mates smoked either regularly or socially and I tried it a few times, ended up buying packs myself, went from smoking only while with others to while I had fags to every day and the rest is history.

I was 13/14 when i first tried it but didn't like it so knocked it on the head for a while. Started again at 15 on a skiing holiday. Again I didn't like it, but by God I persisted and eventually got myself hooked (go me, yay)

I know everyone says it but if I have kids and see them smoking I will remove fag from hand and stub it out on their arm! Mind you my Mum caught me at 17 and swung me round the kitchen, didn't make a blind bit of difference, even when she was lying in coronary care two years later. How desperate I must have been.

Still, free of the stinkin cancer sticks now :D

I'm good thanks. I am also trying to cut back on my forum use as it can be quite an absorbing distraction.....

I was in my 20's too....:(

I was a later developer:(

Actually, I rebelled in a different way. Got married at 17, and had my kids at 20 and 22. By the time I was 24, marriage was on the rocks, we were too young, had two kids and no money. He smoked, and I grudged him that. My pal smoked, and I started smoking at hers. I bought a pack of 10, and forced myself to smoke them in front of him - if he could burn money like that, then so could I!!!!!!!

No thought of health back then, I saw smoking as a indulgence that, if he was enjoying, then so should I !!!!

So basically, I started smoking to spite him - and I always thought of myself as fairy intelligent!

I certainly was smoking at home at 13. My dad smoked Rothmans and my mother smoked Bachelors or Du Maurier (anyone remember them!!) At "social gatherings" at home they had Sobranie Cocktail cigarettes. They were multi

coloured papers but THE THING.

No-one realised the problems, it was the norm...

Some years later (with total apologies to my friends north of the border) I married a Glaswegian ex paratrooper then Steel Erector (who built the whole of the Forth Bridge single handed - even though he wasn't born...) and we bought a house. Throughout our marriage he used to say that if I GAVE UP SMOKING, he'd sign his half of the house over to me ..and he meant it. It was a doubled edged sword - I wish I'd taken the house now............

We got divorced, split the proceeds, he made a new Will leaving everything to me, made a fortune and then went bankrupt .. c'est la vie!!!!

Started having the odd one at age 12 - B&H was the brand of choice for the discerning pre-teen in my day.

By 13 I was regularly smoking occasionally and by late 13 I was smoking several a day.

I think my first attempt came at 9/10, quit :p for a few years then 14 was when I started smoking daily, mainly to 'fit in' with my new mates after moving town - I got expelled from school at 15 for regularly getting caught smoking :(

Started when I was 17.

First time was drunk in Derby, didn't really notice it.

Began "properly" to spend time with a girl - sad isn't it.

Quit a few times.

The first in the summer of 2002 my first one back from University. My crafty "5 minute walks" were noticed quickly - not fools these parents :)

I quit for three months - well almost, had a few when I went to Birmingham to see my partner.

Got back to Uni in the September and started all over again.

I quit for a week back in January 2007, even when I lost my job I kept off them.

Then I got an interview for my current, dare I say it, dream job. Wanted to be "at my best" for the interview, so I started again. This kept on until Sunday.

It's amazing how varied all these stories are - yet how all of them have at least one other similar story on here.

I was 17 when I first had a drag (pretty late I know - it was delayed rebellion, or so I thought) - and only really started smoking regularly when 19 because someone I was dating smoked and I just got into the habit of lighting up when he did. He's long since gone out of my life... and all he left me with was a horrible addiction. Cheers mate!

I can still remember that first fag - sitting on a street corner with a smoker friend and asking to try one. It tasted like horse dung. That friend is still a smoker - and his health is terrible. He's only 35 but has the fitness and wheezing of a 90-year-old. Have been pestering him to sign up to this forum... but, as we all know, the choice has to be his...
