I may have cheated

I've been having a couple of a nightime and not during the day. I realise now that this is a bad idea and the last thing I want to do is get addicted again, it took me so long to quit last time!

So before I get addicted again I'm just going to behave myself now!

Good luck to everyone else, don't fall back into the trap!

I was off them for 5 years and started again - exactly the same circumstances as you.

Thought I could control it and only smoke on a night out etc.

Doesn't work that way.

Before you know it, you'll be back to a pack a day, I think you already know that - don't you?

Stop now before it gets to that stage.

Good luck:)

I wonder how some people can manage to only smoke when out social-i-sing? (most the word was wiped out with asterisks so excuse the dashes!)

My sis only smokes (occasionally) when she goes out and has no dependence on them  Wish I could! Darn I wish I could smoke all the time lol

don't ever forget....

the immutable laws of addiction, the first of which is: "administration of a substance to a person addicted to that substance, no matter how long it's been since that person stopped using that substance, will result in re-establishment of that person's dependence on that substance".

it's just not worth the gamble..... :(

Mojo-jojo....it was thinking I could go out have a drink and have an occassional cig. Thought i could be smart and just keep it to the odd one.

But of course doesn't happen that way...got sucked in again hook line and sinker.

Was off them between May 1995 and June 2000.

sadly it's a story regularly told.....

I guess our choice..., "I will not smoke today" stays with us forever...

I don't doubt that at all...! Booger that it is. But how can it be so? If we have quit for X amount of years and we are no longer addicted to nicotine, how can it still be there waiting to grab us further along down the line? How is it that once you have smoked, you are always going to be at risk of succumbing once you have quit?

I mean, take non smokers. They haven't smoked a fag their whole lives...surely, it is perfectly reasonable to expect to get to their mind frame after going a long period without cigarettes? To not ever be prone to smoking?

Edited on: Forgot to add...what changes permanently within our body/brain that we can never go back to being a non smoker as opposed to an ex-smoker?

oh, and don't forget the Rose-tinted smoking goggles...

non smokers have no wish to smoke and it doesn't enter their minds, ex-smokers, on the other hand, seem to easily forget the horridness and remember smoking as some sort of pleasure they were forced to give up.

It's so easy a year down the line to think, "that was a gorgeous meal, i think i'm going to round it off with a cigar and a brandy....waiter...!"

On the bright side, i think choosing not to smoke becomes easier and almost second nature. That's why it's so easy to slip, it's been weeks or months since you've had to consciously make the choice.

:(

That is something I feel I can relate to. I feel like I am doing away with something that I really enjoyed. I did enjoy smoking too, which makes quitting even harder ggrrr

Once a nicotine addict, always a nicotine addict..unfortunate but true I feel.

My Mum has been quit for 25 years and would still tell you she has the odd craving.

The thought of never having one again, ever, is quite daunting for me, so I don't look at it that way, I'm just saying that today I won't smoke.

I wouldn't dream of telling you how you feel but in the past i've told people i enjoy smoking too.

I used to tell people that because i wasn't prepared or ready to quit and if you're not going to quit such a stupid and clearly self-harming habit, let's face it, you need a damn fine excuse..!

If i was a counsellor i'd ask you to tell me what you enjoyed about it..?

If you did I'd probably end up convincing you that what you enjoyed wasn't anything to do with the smoking but I'm not so I won't.

:D

When I look back to the two years I had given up for a few years ago, I can remember that I never, ever thought about cigarettes. Not ever. Even when I went out clubbing and many of my mates would be smoking nor did I even think about lighting up then.

However, I can remember the night I did light up and I rue that day even now! I was out at the pub and I was with my usual mates. One of 'em asked me if I wanted a fag and I said no. After being asked three times I thought sod it, I'll just have the one. And the one it was. Two weeks later I smoke another 'one'. Week after that I smoke 2 or 3 and then I slowly got hooked in again ggrrr So here I am after letting myself down those few years ago!

I hope I will be like I was before, where I do not even think about cigs but only time will tell!

ethanm1 be very careful!

This is what I also did a few times and it feels horrible. I just smoked one...In the end, I did not smoke the previous amount but...it took me a long time to stop again

Thats my story:

nosmokingday.org.uk/forum/s... post 25

What we smokers have to understand is that not smoking even one, is a know-how, it's like someone telling you how something works. Why ignore that? I also understand that you already know that but it's your mind trying to trick you that 'maybe you' can control it...

I wish you to go quickly back to your not smoking state, not even one. 6 months is a long time, you really don't want to go over the first days, first weeks again. The sooner you stop the better. I regret I did smoke that 'just one'. After that I kept fooling myself that I'm in control (smoking occasionaly) for about 4 months... When I stopped...same withdrawal symptoms, same fears, same anxiety again...

Now I would be 9 months smoke free!! :( In three months I would celebrate one year. But, no, I, like many nicotine addicts, thought I could 'just have one' (and even one more etc.)... It's an illusion ;).
