Son’s kidney biopsy

My six year old was firstly diagnosed with hsp and with that came kidney involvement. My son had a kidney biopsy done on the 17th of October and we had his results on the 24th of October.

His consultant said that his biopsy results showed “strong positivity for c3, but he had normal complement levels which they would expect to be low on patients with c3” This has greatly confused me and his consultant does not explain very much at all! I received a letter today about the blood test results they did on the 24th of October I will attach it in this post. I’d greatly appreciate if someone could make sense of it if at all possible? Thank you so so much in advance

Hi there!

I don’t have any experience in the diagnosis you/your son are dealing with, but wanted to let you know someone “out there” is reading your post and thinking of you.

My own son was diagnosed with stage 3 CKD due to an undetected/untreated UTI complicated by reflux nephropathy. Our path to diagnosis was confusing and frustrating, complete with various care providers not listening to us or taking time to explain things properly.

My only “advice” — and I’m sure you’re already aware of this, so I hope it doesn’t come across as patronizing; take it more as a voice of solidarity — is to keep asking questions, keep demanding answers, and be persistent. You are a vital part of your son’s care team, and the doctors/consultants have an obligation to bring you along the journey. Vital to that is making sure you understand what’s going on, what various options and outcomes could come next, and mapping out a plan together — inclusive of your and your son’s emotional needs, too. For me, being knowledgeable helps me cope and be a strong, confident participant in my son’s care. Even at age 3, I do believe he benefits from this.

Wishing you both all the best. Do come back and update if you are able. This community is small, but very genuinely caring.
