Pd catheter exit site care

I was wondering what antibiotic everyone is using to take care of their Pd catheter exit site. I am currently using (since May) gentamicin sulfate cream. I am convinced that it makes me itchy around the site and I can't scratch it. The doctors and nurses suggested benadryl. That hasn't worked either.

What does everyone else use on a daily basis to prevent infection at the exit site?

Thank you

Renee

I'm post PD as of May, but I was using Gentamicin 0.3% Opthalmic (eye drops).

Originally I used Mupirocin ointment 2%, but my site got red from it, so they switched me. I was the only person not at my clinic on Mupirocin, they said.

My skin also seemed to itch from the eye drops, but they had me apply OTC hydrocortisone cream within 1/4 inch of the site. That helped me with the itch. I would apply it for a few days after it seemed to be all better, otherwise it would flare up again.

Another thing that I found to be a problem is that the Except (site cleaner) left residue on my skin which caused me to itch. I ended up stopping it's use and showering every day before my site cleaning with antimicrobial soap and letting it dry naturally (under gauze) before I did my site change. That, along with the hydrocortisone cream, when necessary, made it bearable. Also, make sure it is dry between your catheter and your skin where it lays against your skin. That was an issue for me.

These things were all recommended by my clinic. I did not come up with this on my own.

Thank you. I didn't think about the Except solution, but that might be it because what you described from your skin is what is happening. Maybe I was just thinking it was the site and not the area around it. I will try your method of cleaning.

I used Mupirocin 2%.
