Does your transplant center recommend a certain vaccine like Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson Johnson?? Which one would be the best for kidney transplant or all the same?

Thank you for answering. I would think the same although did hear from mt transplant friend that she didn't develop any antibodies after her 2 doses of Moderna. Hopefully you do!!!

Have you worked as a nurse without getting vaccinated all this time? I am surprised that you didn't get the priority vaccination back in December.

Hi! Havent been working since March 2020. When the pandemic hit us in Canada, the governement took all at risk people out of the hospital. So since in was on dialysis, i stopped working. I’m still not back at work for the same reason i was taken off work. That’s why i only got my vaccine yesterday :)

I guess your doctor is not in favor of Astra zeneca. Did he say why?

Amyb93 profile image
Amyb93 in reply to pepeagamez

Based on the research and given the side effects that have been reported, they felt it was best if i didn’t get that one. And our government doesn’t give astrazeneca to people who are immunosurpressed. Fou d that out yesterday at my vacinne whe filling out the form.

My wife 60 years old took the astra zeneca and had bad side effects. I was about to call an ambulance but i am glad she is doing better now. Thanks.

I was to told to take the first one offered. Got the J & J over a month ago.

Same here. By chance I got the Pfizer, but I wouldn't have cared if another vaccine was given.

Did you make any antibodies??? I've heard many kidney patients haven't. It's so sad

LisaSnow profile image
LisaSnow in reply to Dna4christ

I did test positive for the spike protein antibodies (antibodies that mRNA vaccines trigger body to make). Some get tested for IgG or IgM (antibodies for the virus itself) instead and may get a negative result if they have never been infected with the virus, even if they had the mRNA vaccines.

It is important to know that even if no antibodies were detected, those vaccinated individuals STILL have much more protection from being seriously ill including death if they ever get infected.

Really??? That's the first I've heard so far.

Read "Protection Against COVID-19 Is About More Than Just Antibodies" section.

Our immune system is complex, and my advice is that we should try to relax and stay diligent after vaccination. All the worries can only make people unnecessarily stressed, making immune system less healthy.

Yes. I'd keep to doing everything even after vaccination. And that's really good for you. There's another argument on myfortic being the cause of those negative results. Who knows. Take care Lisa :) thank you!

I had my second vaccine shot (Pfizer) last Wednesday. Aside from some soreness at the injection site, I've experienced no symptoms at all. I'm very happy to have received it.

Having said that, please remember that fully vaccinated ≠ fully protected. You still should follow safety precautions. A transplant-recipient friend contracted COVID ten days after his second shot. He spent a few days in the ICU and it was one of the worst experience in his life. He is home now and recovering.

Please continue to wear a mask and wash hands often.

Yes absolutely true! Glad you haven't had side effects. They make me nervous. 3 of my family members got the JJ vaccine..and they suffered for two days 😷

No. They don't get involved. I had Pfizer. No side effects. Personally, I don't like J&J. I boycott them whenever possible.

Glad u did. There's a pause now. I'm thinking pfizer as well..but boy am I nervous 😓. I want it badly but super nervous

in reply to Dna4christ

It will be OK. You need to get the vaccine soon. What is the hold up where you live?

Dna4christ profile image
Dna4christ in reply to

Only a pause for Johnson. There's no hold up for others. I had the covid earlier this year so had waited per doctors recommendation. But now, I am debating to get or not. Asked for antibody test to see if I still have any antibodies from the monoclonal infusion or the covid itself :)

What are you nervous about?

Dna4christ profile image
Dna4christ in reply to LisaSnow

I dont know.. the side effects?? Something going wrong? .. now there's a hold up. I can't find an appt anywhere for the vaccines. All booked for the next 5 days

LisaSnow profile image
LisaSnow in reply to Dna4christ

Side effects are possible but pass quickly. Something going wrong is highly unlikely so no worries there. The vaccine demand is now higher with supply reduced (pause on J&J) so just keep trying - all pharmacies and all community centers.

Got Moderna first shot in jan. And my second in Feb. Thought I had side effects but it was too large a prescription on myfortic. When you are taking so many medications it's hard to determine what reaction is due what.

I did not have any specific recommendations from my transplant center - just advise to get vaccinated. I got Moderna just because it was available on the day of my appointment. I am also participating in John Hopkins research and getting antibody tests after each vaccination. Antibody test was negative after the first shot, but now, 4 weeks after the second shot, antibody test came up with Positive result.

That's wonderful news. Glad you are helping the transplant community. Did you have any side effects??

Almost nothing except minor discomfort in the arm. I was quite disappointed at that time because I assumed that a real work of vaccine should result in some side effects.

Ohhh thats good for you lol I usually don't have any side effects with vaccines but this one for some reason makes me so nervous hahahaha.. must be all the news

My doctor said to get whatever vaccine I could first. I got the J&J a little over a month ago and had some minor body aches especially my neck/shoulders and my lymph nodes in neck and armpits were a little swollen feeling for a few days. My husband (who has no health issues) got a fever of 103 the night after the J&J but was mostly fine the next day. We both felt a little blah for 2 days. However, I just had antibodies tested and don't have any at the 1 month mark, will be checked again at 3 month mark.
