HD or PD which is better
My husband did hemo for a little over a year and was exhausted all the time we got maybe 1 good day out of the week with pd he is full of energy less restrions it's healthier given your body its own way to work out the toxins there is 2 ways to do pd one is manuals which we learned on in case were camping traveling or lose electric it's our back up then the cycler at night he hooks up and goes to sleep gets up and in hooks and is done for the day of gives to the ability to travel live your life more freely no needles which is a plus and less times at the clinic training is usually a week then it's once a month with pd nurses and once a month with kidney doctor unless something comes up that you have to go in more
I have done both and an doing PD now. With PD I feel much better than with HD. The HD took away most of my energy and madder it very difficult to function. PD takes a bit of work to set up each night but then I sleep through the treatment time. It's definitely a discipline but I feel it's worth it..
I did hemodialysis (HD) for a little six months & switched to peritoneal dialysis ( PD) while waiting on a transplant. Hemodialysis for me was pure hell. I was always sick, no appetite, drained - no energy and a very restrictive diet (even if I had felt like eating). I switched to PD and the difference was immense. I was able to work full time, and did dialysis while I slept. My energy level returned, and I wasn't always sick or feeling drained. Then I was very fortunate and received a kidney transplant, it was a perfect match which should have lasted well over 20+ years, however I had unknown allergies to some of the medication which caused a severe rejection episode that scarred the transplanted kidney...it failed after 9 years. So I went back to PD. I continue to work full time and do dialysis at night.
Just like many, I have experienced both types of treatment, HD and PD.
Both have their good points and bad points. I think that I felt better with HD but mine was through a CVC which can be dangerous and limited in long term use.
PD has revealed my purpose in life to me, in terms of executing Patient-Driven Innovation in PD Home Therapy.
I miss the social setting of going to the clinic 3x per week but don't miss watching dead people taken away. Yes, I witnessed this 3x times. Psychologically, I don't miss that.
I must say that it is an individual decision and hard to generalize in terms of which is better or worse. For me, anyway.
